Public Hearing This Week on WSSC Rate Structure Proposals

In the name of promoting conservation, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) hopes to adopt a new rate structure that will make water charges even higher for high-volume users. Using less water is not an option for some businesses because water is key to their operations. High-volume users like hospitals, bio-pharmaceutical companies, hotels, ans others, already pay a higher rate per gallon for all the water they use, and this proposal would further increase those costs. The Commission has five options for its new rate structure. One, seemingly the most fair, would simply set the same rate per gallon for all customers, but it is not likely to be adopted. The other five would continue, but worsen the current structure, which increases the rate per gallon on all water used, as the total volume goes up. A public hearing is scheduled for this Wednesday.
