Another Regional Initiative, This One for Zero-Emission Vehicles
NJ Spotlight
An eight-state effort wants to help reduce pollution from the transportation sector, NJ's biggest source of greenhouse-gas emissions.
The Christie administration shunned regional collaborations with neighboring states to fight climate change, but that probably will not be the case next year.

Climate Change in New Jersey? It's Here
NJ Spotlight
Climate change is happening in New Jersey, and some of its impacts are already occurring: warmer summers, more days of extreme rainfalls, and increased frequency and intensity of floods due to rising sea levels.
Hoping to kick off a statewide dialogue to fashion a comprehensive strategy for climate-change policy, Rutgers University and the New Jersey Climate Adaption Alliance gathered thought leaders at Duke Farm yesterday to begin hashing out strategies to deal with global warming and its consequences.

Fuel-cell Cars Finally Drive off the Lot
Chemical & Engineering News
Raymond Lim, a psychology and statistics instructor, describes himself as an "automobile enthusiast who likes to try out new technology." Celso Pierre also has a thing for cool gadgets. He's a mechanical engineer who loves hiking and the great outdoors. Anytime Pierre hears about new technology, he rushes to learn about it. For both men, that excitement has long included electric vehicles and fuel-efficient cars. So Lim and Pierre jumped at the opportunity to join the small but growing number of motorists who zip around California's roadways in their own fuel-cell vehicles. Lim drives a Toyota Mirai and Pierre motors around in a Hyundai Tucson.

Engineering Surgical Implants that Grow with Children
engineering.com
Medical implants can save lives by correcting structural defects in the heart and other organs. But until now, the use of medical implants in children has been complicated by the fact that fixed-size implants cannot expand in tune with a child's natural growth.
To address this unmet surgical need, a team of researchers from Boston Children's Hospital
and Brigham and Women's Hospital
have developed a growth-accommodating implant designed for use in a cardiac surgical procedure called a valve annuloplasty, which repairs leaking mitral and tricuspid valves in the heart.

A Vision for Safety, has reinforced the National Society of Professional Engineers' disappointment and deepened its concern due to the guidance's failure to adequately take into account NSPE's expressed public safety concerns.
NSPE has proactively engaged and advocated for the need to ensure that major technological, safety, and ethical implications are considered before engaging in testing and deployment of autonomous vehicles on public roads.
