deansgs Input Request regarding the selection of the Vice-Provost and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies

As announced in late August, we have embarked on the process of selecting a Vice-Provost and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. This is an important search for the University and I would like to thank those who provided input on the present state and future prospects of the School, and made suggestions towards the membership of the search committee.

I am pleased to report that the search committee is now staffed and that we are ready to launch the search process. To assist us in this complex endeavor, we have retained the services of Laverne Smith & Associates Inc ., an experienced firm based in Toronto.

The search will be comprehensive in scope with an integral portion being a process of consultation, and we would ask for your assistance in gathering information to further inform the process. Please click here to complete a brief form to be returned to Laverne Smith & Associates Inc.

As this is a very important matter for the University, your input is critical and I would ask you to take the few minutes required to help us in this important undertaking. All responses will be held in strict confidence by Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. and the inclusion of your name is optional. Please complete your questionnaire by October 11, 2017.

Thank you for your time and input.
Sincerely,
Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon,
Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)
Chair, Search Committee

protocolReminder to Heads and Undergrad Chairs: Scheduling department visits to discuss new Academic Consideration Protocol

The Associate/Assistant Deans and the Academic Accommodation Counsellor would like to visit your department for a short presentation about the new Faculty of Arts and Science Protocol for Short-Term Academic Consideration, which is intended to guide students, instructors and advisors in situations where extenuating circumstances are interfering with a student's ability to complete academic requirements related to a course(s) for a short period of time.  This protocol is being developed in response to the recently-approved Senate Policy on Academic Consideration for Students in Extenuating Circumstances.

This presentation is meant to provide an overview of the protocol and corresponding website, connect instructors with contacts and resources, and answer any questions you may have about Academic Consideration.

Please email [email protected] by 2 October 2017 to indicate:
  • Information about departmental meetings taking place from October to December (including dates, times, locations, and the meeting Chair if known)
  • Any preferred dates where you can allot 20-30 minutes for this presentation
  • Typical number of attendees (estimate)
  • Whether or not technology is available in your usual meeting room for a powerpoint presentation
Once this information is collected, we will follow up with each department to confirm meeting dates and additional details.
healthHealth and Safety Awareness Training Mandatory for all new employees

With the new semester underway, we enter a period of time when departments are often hiring and bringing new employees on board.

This is a reminder that all new employees, whether casual, part-time or full-time, must be provided with the required health and safety orientation.  The orientation process, which consists of an on-line training session called Health and Safety Awareness and the completion of an orientation checklist by the employee and their supervisor, is outlined on the Department of Environmental Health & Safety website at the following link: http://www.safety.queensu.ca/orient.htm

Not only is health and safety orientation mandated by the Occupational Health & Safety Act, it is an important first step in providing the information and knowledge employees will need to work safety in their roles.

If there are any questions or concerns regarding orientation training, please contact the Department of Environmental Health & Safety at [email protected] or at ext. 32999.
