A Letter from our Principal
|
|
Dear St. Bernard’s Parents,
October is Respect Life Month and your children will be learning more about God’s precious gift of life. As we do every year, all our students will participate in a Respect Life Contest. Rules per grade will be given out shortly. We will recognize the winners at our first Friday Mass in November.
The lessons at all grade levels will focus on God’s love for every human being: young, elderly, ill, handicapped, and healthy, and how each one of us plays an important role in protecting human life. The students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be discussing actions that jeopardize God’s gift of human life: abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, and embryonic stem cell research (adult stem cell research and treatments are acceptable). These topics will be discussed in an appropriate manner, according to grade level, and keeping our Catholic faith in the forefront. The purpose of the lessons is to reflect upon what our Church teaches about respect for human life, and not get into the graphic and painful details of the actions that can end human life. Science and research, though important, are not the focus of the Respect Life assignments. The students should avoid using the internet when researching information about abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, and embryonic stem cell research. Typing in these topics may bring up not only information, but images that you may not want your child to view.
Know that every teacher is aware that the topics that will be discussed are delicate, but they need to be addressed to teach our young people that life is precious, and it must be respected. Please use this opportunity to talk with your child about the importance of respecting human life from conception to natural death.
We continue to be reminded that life is precious and we must live every moment to the fullest, following Jesus’ commandment to love God, self, and others. May God bless you and your families.
