New safety protocol information to be shared with students

In early September, DASD communicated with families information about our school district and local first responders (police, fire, EMS) moving to an "Options-Based Approach" for our active threat response protocols. This protocol is sometimes referred to as, "Run, Hide, Fight." As a part of our transition to a new safety response, our local law enforcement led a day of training for all of our educational and office staff in this approach. The training has empowered staff with the ability to use their best judgment in taking action to ensure student and staff safety. In addition, we held a parent/guardian informational meeting on September 18 to provide a forum to increase understanding about the school district's change in response to active threats and to answer parent/guardian questions.

The next phase of our transition involves informing students. We will be sharing age-level appropriate presentations with students during the week of October 16 . The information to be shared with students will support our new active threat response, and was created in collaboration with our school counselors. This information has been adapted from a number of existing resources used by schools across the nation.

This letter was also emailed to all DASD families on Friday, October 13.

October is Keeping Kids Safe Online Month
by Kim Bannigan
DASD Learning Information Systems Department Coordinator

Our Department of Public Instruction has compiled plenty of resources for parents, families, and students. One of most difficult areas to navigate for digital safety is social media, but we've got some tips and help for you!

In addition to raking leaves this fall, why not schedule a privacy or digital footprint clean-up day? There are plenty of resources to help you and your family members, no matter their ages. (And don't forget about your parents!)
Consider what happens on the Internet in one minute . . . 16 million text messages, 1.8 million Snaps (Snapchat), 46,200 Instagram posts, $751,522 spent online, 156 million email messages sent, 70,017 hours of Netflix viewed, and 4.1 million YouTube videos viewed. (Source: Business InsiderAll of us can use some assistance in navigating or wading through all of that.

If you are willing to volunteer your time to be a resource to students in the DeForest Area School District, please take a couple of minutes to complete a survey (link below). This survey is done each year, so please complete it even if you did so last year or you didn't receive a phone call.
