Fall is here and classes are well underway. We hope that everyone is happy with their classes. Thank you to everyone who participated in Bring a Friend Week! It was a wonderful week to share our love of the arts.
With the fall season also comes the cold & flu season. We try very hard to keep the studio clean. Please, if your child is sick, don't bring them to class. We can always schedule a make-up class for them. If your child is unable to make it to class, please let us know by calling the studio at 301-846-4247.
As the weather gets colder, dancers should make sure they wear their jackets/coats when leaving the dance studio. Even though their bodies are warm, they need to cover up to prevent injury to their muscles.
Dance shoes must never be worn outside! By saving your dance shoes for studio use only, you not only protect the life of the shoe but our dance floors as well. PreDance and Combo students should replace their tap ties with plain black elastic to prevent trip factors. Ask the front desk for information on how to do this.
As always, don't hesitate to contact us if you have any
questions, suggestions, or concerns. We are always here to help.
Sincerely,
Gina Korrell, Artistic Director

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Four weeks that we set aside to acknowledge and applaud the great women AND men in our lives struggling with the devastating war against cancer. Breast cancer not only touches our lives away from dance, it also affects the wonderful people we call dancers. In 2014, one very special dancer, Maggie Kudirka ("The Bald Ballerina") in the Joffrey Ballet was diagnosed with stage four Breast Cancer and at most five years to live. For many that can be a debilitating condition that causes the individual to give up time and energy consuming tasks such as dance. Kudirka, however has remained strong, she returned to dance after a year of chemotherapy and has even started a non-profit fundraiser to supply grants to hopeful dancers with a condition like hers. Although she will never stop getting treatments or will be able to dance the same nine to five, six days a week schedule, she is continuously an inspiration for all dancers out there. Ballet is a very structured and disciplined art form, that gave life in some way to every style of dance out there. Dance, requires a lot out of a human being, it requires confidence, diligence, care, hard work, beauty, strength, good character and pure love for the act. It is tolling both mentally and physically, as it sometimes demands perfection. But Maggie Kudirka found a way to dance and be imperfect, to be crippled by breast cancer, yet let it make her strong and persevering in the face of seemingly impossible odds. If "The Bald Ballerina" can make beautiful movements and appreciate the body that she was given, even with cancer than every dancer in the world can do the same. Because, no one has perfect turnout, no one can avoid looking awkward sometimes and feeling as if they are the worst dancer in the world. Because it doesn't really matter how much you weigh on the scale, the size of your turnout or the length of your legs.
Each and every dancer is made to perfection, to an individual perfection, one that can never truly stop you from being a dancer because really, you can't be a dancer without being the very best you that YOU can be.
