Middle School Classroom Observation for Lower School Parents
Wondering what happens in the halls and classrooms of DCD's middle school?  On  Tuesday, Oct. 17th , DCD's Middle School invites you to come experience classes "in action."  We often hear that Lower School families are unaware of what happens in the Middle School. This opportunity is meant to provide a brief glimpse into the Middle School journey.

The schedule for the morning is as follows:
8:30 - 9:45 a.m.        Classroom visits in grades 6-8. There will be five minutes of travel time for students at 8:55 a.m. to transition to period 2.
9:45 - 10:00 a.m.      During Middle School recess, we invite you to hear from a few students during a Q&A session in Room 263.
10:05 - 10:30 a.m.    Opportunity to visit one of nine Middle School Arts classes

Please feel free to visit for a short while or for the duration.
Save the Date for DCD's Annual Meeting!
Please join us on Thursday evening, October 19 for our annual community wide gathering of current and former DCD parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends.  This meeting is a wonderful evening of community and has traditionally been a highlight of the school's fall calendar. We hope you will be able to join the other members of our community to hear about the current state of DCD and our plans for the future.

Please RSVP to Kylie Lacerda, Director of Events, by Friday, October 13

Read On! Library Blog
Once again, we will be promoting the nominees for the Massachusetts Children's Book  There are two graphic novels that are nominated for this year's Massachusetts Children's Book Awards: Lowriders in Space by Cathy Camper, illustrated by Raúl the Third (Chronicle) and Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson (Dial).

When I was a child, I never paid attention to author's notes in books. Now, I try to impress on young readers that there is often a treasury of background information that will often add to their enjoyment. There is "A Note About Lowriders" in the back of Camper's graphic novel that should really be at the beginning of Lowriders in Space. A lowrider is a customized car with hydraulic jacks that allow the chassis to be lowered nearly to the road. This custom was created by Mexican-Americans in Southern California after WWII. The author took this idea and created a fantasy about a car that travels out of this world.
