As part of special events presented by the Princeton University Glee Club , guest artist  Jakob Lindberg , lute, and Yale faculty  James Taylor , tenor teach Princeton University students in a masterclass free and open to all. A free recital on Monday follows, with the pair performing lute songs by Caccini, Dowland, and more .

CELEBRATING THE NEW LEWIS CENTER FOR THE ARTS COMPLEX

To celebrate the opening of Princeton's new Lewis Center for the Arts complex, join us for an exciting multi-day Festival of the Arts highlighting the breadth and uniqueness of the arts at Princeton. The Festival will include concerts, plays, readings, dance performances, art exhibitions, screenings, multidisciplinary presentations, community workshops and site-specific events presented by the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Department of Music with professional, faculty, student, and alumni artists. Events will be open to the public and most will be free.

Led by Artistic Director  Bjarte Elke, the Norwegian Baroque ensemble Barokksolistene gracefully synthesize the vernacular music of their homeland with traditional repertoire, and here at Princeton they will treat us to a double-header: a 6pm in-the-round performance in Richardson of music from English theatre and the court in the time of Henry Purcell, followed by a 9:30PM "Alehouse Session" of songs and melodies from the pubs and taverns of 17th-century England. The "Alehouse Session" will take place in the newly opened Lewis Arts complex to celebrate its arrival on campus. Please join for both, and bring an appetite for beer!

The Musicology Colloquium series hosts renowned pianist and musicologist William Chapman Nyaho

Subject of the musicology colloquium discussion: "In and Out of Africa: Advocating Art Music of Africa and Its Diaspora". Nyaho will perform a  lecture-recital  in Taplin Auditorium at 7:30pm the same day, featuring music by composers of the African heritage.

Renowned for their interpretations of 18th-century classics on gut-stringed instruments, Quatuor Mosaïques have brought the rich, delicate timbre of gut strings to modern audiences on four continents and in countless prestigious chamber music festivals. Their performances of the early Haydn quartets earned them a Gramophone Award, and were heralded as "probing, visionary interpretations" by  The Washington Post.  This is the first period instrument quartet in Princeton University Concerts' history, and they promise to cast a spell with their core repertoire from the Galant era.

In its first performance of the year, the Princeton University Sinfonia, conducted by Ruth Ochs, ventures into the beautiful Rocky Common Room, treating the community to a free concert of orchestral gems.

GERALD CLAYTON TRIO & STUDENTS

Four-time GRAMMY nominated pianist/composer  Gerald Clayton  and his trio comes to Princeton in a performance featuring  Jazz at Princeton University  students.

Gerald Clayton has performed and recorded with numerous internationally renowned artists, and since 2013, has toured with saxophone legend Charles Lloyd. He is the Musical Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, a project that has featured his trio along with Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard and Raul Midón. The son of beloved bass player and composer John Clayton, Gerald enjoyed a familial apprenticeship from an early age. He honors the legacy of his father and all his musical ancestors through a commitment to artistic exploration, innovation, and reinvention.

The  Princeton University Orchestra  opens its 2017-18 season with a celebratory program featuring famous works by two symphonic titans: Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler. Piano faculty  Geoffrey Burleson , hailed by  The New York Times  for his "vibrant and compelling" performances, joins the orchestra in Beethoven's luminous fourth piano concerto before the evening culminates in Mahler's groundbreaking first symphony.

Tabea Zimmermann, regularly cited as the world's greatest living violist, treats us to a full evening of her majestic playing alongside pianist Thomas Hoppe. In Zimmermann's hands, the instrument sings, filled with "graceful athleticism and a feathery left-hand touch." ( The New York Times) Hoppe and Zimmermann will perform the cornerstones of the viola sonata repertoire, rarely heard on the Richardson Auditorium stage.

The following day, Zimmermann ventures into the community, launching Princeton University Concerts' extensive supplemental " Beyond the Music" programming (see events listed below).

Following her recital on the Princeton University Concerts series the previous evening, celebrated violist Tabea Zimmermann   launches Princeton University Concerts' extensive supplemental " Beyond the Music " programming by coaching supremely talented Princeton University student violists in an open workshop as part of the Performers as Teachers series. 

This is a rare opportunity to go behind-the scenes, delve into the artist's understanding of music, and witness the development of a new generation of musicians.

Princeton University Concerts: Mindfulness with Music

Tabea Zimmermann  presents the first Live Music Meditation of the year. As part of Princeton University Concerts' revolutionary Mindfulness with Music series, a partnership with the Princeton University Office of Religious Lifethe community is invited for a half-hour guided meditation to live music performed by Zimmermann. 

The event will be followed by a discussion with the artist over a light lunch.
