Another review, this from best-selling author, James O. Born:
"An Honorable War takes the reader on a journey of passion and drama that history often overlooks. With the Spanish-American war as a backdrop, Robert Macomber weaves a great story of not only honor, but action and love."

TRAVELING IN PETER'S WAKE
TO KEY WEST, FL
|
Key West is the locale of many of my novels, a favorite port of call for Peter Wake, and a fascinating island-city for you to visit today. One of the places I recommend you check out
is the legendary San Carlos Institute
at 516 Duval Street (next to Margaritaville).
The Institute has been located in several structures since 1871, and this one was built in 1890 after the Great Fire of 1886 destroyed the previous structure a block away.
Read
The Darkest Shade of Honor
for the story of what happened to Wake during that catastrophe. This is also where Wake is surprised to meet his future son-in-law in 1892, in
The Assassin's Honor
.
The present building was where José Martí gave his famous unification speech in 1892, when he ascended to the leadership of the Cuban independence movement. Martí loved this center of Cuban culture, visiting frequently during the 1890s. I am glad to report it has been renovated to its former grandeur and is the current home to several historical and art exhibitions. So the next time you're drinking your way along the tourist traps on Duval Street, stop in and see the San Carlos Institute,
a must-see part of Key West history,
with a classy Cuban flair!

CLOSING THOUGHTS
|
Sometimes, an act of compassion is done for strangers. Sometimes it's done for family. I experienced both recently. For so many, the last 6 weeks have been a nightmare of natural disasters. Thousands of strangers have helped with a donation, relief work, or a prayer. I did as well.
While all this was going on, I had my own disaster: during the hurricanes my Dad's aging process escalated. This week, he died. He was a larger-than-life kind of guy, highly respected for his professional accomplishments around the world. He spoke seven languages, was a friend of both working men and the elite; always a gentleman. He judged a person not by their color, religion, or politics, but by their character. Many immigrants became great Americans with his help. He lived a jam packed 97-year life, and I am honored to be his son.
Dad had a very special friend, my wife Nancy. He and she formed a strong bond long ago, and recently it became very important. She kept him calm and safe as we all hunkered down for days in misery with no power & no air conditioning before, during & after Hurricane Irma. She helped me hold him during his final days ruined with pain. He and she could communicate, even when he couldn't talk. Her compassion and strength was endless. Nancy was a blessing to my Dad, and is to me.
Onward and upward, for us all, toward those far distant horizons ...
