New Affordable Assisted Living Opens for Occupancy
Belvedere Senior Housing opened for occupancy in late August. The affordable assisted living community features 126 apartments for low-income older adults who need some help to maintain their independence. Gardant manages the community, which is located in Merrillville, Indiana.

It is Gardant's third affordable assisted living community in Indiana. The company also manages Oasis at 30th in Indianapolis and Silver Birch of Hammond.

An additional seven communities in Indiana, to be managed by Gardant, are under construction in Bloomington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Michigan City, Muncie, New Albany and on Shelby Street on the far south side of Indianapolis.

Balancing Mobility and the Fear of Falling
Becoming more sedentary because you have a fear of falling actually increases the likelihood that you will fall, notes Lisa Esposito in a report posted Aug. 30 on the U.S. News and World Report website. She cites information that emerged from the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics World Congress.

Avoiding Frailty and Disability
In another recent report posted on the U.S. News and World Report website, Dr. Ronan Factora emphasized the importance of getting enough physical activity. It is unfortunate that low levels of physical activity has become a common way of life for many individuals in the United States, he says. Low levels of physical activity leads to much higher risks of frailty and disability, which impacts the ability to live independently. It is "extremely difficult" to reverse frailty, he adds.

Health Award Finalist
Rick Banas, Vice President of Development and Positioning with Gardant, is one of 80 Finalists selected from nearly 2,500 nominees for a 2017 WEGO Health Awards. The awards program is designed to recognize individuals and organizations who use their influence and voice to transform health care across the globe.

Rick is one of the five finalists in the Best in Show: Twitter category.

Smoking and Frailty among Older Adults
Researchers in Britain have found that older adults who smoke may be more likely to become frail, says a HealthDay report posted on the Medline Plus website. Frailty, according to the report, increases the likelihood of falls, broken bones and hospitalizations.

The report goes on to say that research indicates those who quit smoking didn't face a higher risk of frailty.

Generosity and Happiness
Another HealthDay report posted on the Medline Plus website notes that even small acts of generosity can create a sense of happiness.

Gardant Welcomes New CFO
Greg Echols has joined Gardant Management Solutions as the company's new Chief Financial Officer.

Greg has a 30-year career in accounting, financial management, real estate development and the senior housing and care sector, with the past 5 years serving as CFO of a Tennessee-based, multi-state operator of skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee and is a Certified Public Accountant.

World Alzheimer's Month
September is World Alzheimer's Month. The estimate from the Alzheimer's Association is that more the five million individuals in the United States are living with the disease. It ranks as the sixth leading cause of death in our country.

Gardant operates several assisted living communities specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer's or related dementia. The focus of these communities is on providing residents with opportunities to maintain a sense of purpose and belonging in all seasons of dementia.

Heart and Brain Health
A new advisory about the health of our heart and our brain has been issued by the American Heart and American Stroke Association, says a report posted on the Medical News Today website. The report indicates that the steps we can take to keep our cardiovascular system healthy also will help us keep our brain healthy. The advisory cites seven measures we can take.

Walk to End Alzheimer's
On September 16, some Gardant employees participated in the 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer's at Perry Farm in Bradley, Illinois. The team was able to raise over $2500 to advance the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

Older Adults and Cold Weather
Another report posted on the Medical News Today website cites research that shows a nutritional supplement called L-carnitine might one day help improve the ability of older adults to keep warm as temperatures drop.
