Top Road & Trail Rides Across the Kawarthas

If you are looking to squeeze in a last ride or two before the snow flies or already thinking ahead to summer 2018, look no further than Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes area. With 2 cycling maps showing road routes and trails, planning a day or longer of rides is easy. With many options for stops in smaller and bigger towns, during, pre or post ride, there is more to do than just ride.

From the ample selection of quiet country roads, a number of paved loops have been mapped and signed. In the City of Kawartha Lakes, and north east of Lindsay, one of the most popular cottage country rides is the  South Sturgeon Route . While only 36km towards Bobcaygeon and back, an easy add-on circuits north of the lake and south from Fenelon Falls. South from Peterborough, the Hills, Views and Pastries Route is a top pick for those looking to rev it up. A convenient and not to be missed half way stop on both the 65km and 80km loop is the Pastry  Peddler  in Millbrook. This bicycle friendly cafĂ© also is home to Frog Cycles and a vintage bike gallery.

For rail trail fans we suggest taking a spin on the Kawarthas Trans Canada Trail. This excellent off-road option makes for a scenic and pleasant ride from a variety of start points. For a second time we returned to this trail, hosting one of our Ontario By Bike Rides and overnight tours starting in Uxbridge and ending in Lakefield, riding a total of 100km over 2 days. Read more about last month's ride on our recently published blog: A Hot Ride on a Cool Trail. You can also easily plan a self-supported version of this same ride by downloading and replicating our ride itinerary.

Bike 200 - Canada 150

While Canada has been busy with 150 celebrations this year, did you know that 2017 marks the bicycle's 200th birthday?

Using his rolling invention, Baron Karl von Drais of Mannheim, Germany took his inaugural ride in June 1817, covering a distance of 14km on what looks like a very uncomfortable contraption.

While it took another 40 or so years for the idea to catch on, the bicycle was originally invented as an alternative to horse and coach, solving transportation problems from day one. Click HERE to read more.
Reminder to Campers & Bike Riders!
- Take This Short Survey -

Cycling is growing in Ontario and cyclists are increasing looking for overnight accommodations while travelling, including staying at campgrounds.

Using the results of this survey and other research, we're considering updating our criteria for campgrounds to best suit the needs of bicycle travellers.

Please share this survey with others so we can ensure that cyclists' needs are being met at camping facilities across the province. Survey closes November 1. We'll be sure to share the result in our first enewsletter of 2018.

Stay Tuned For 2018

With many temperate days ahead, not everyone is ready to pack away their bicycles for the season and indeed many of us ride all winter long.

Layer up, try a fat bike, don't let the fun stop now and keep rolling.

As this is our last enewsletter of 2017, we encourage you to stay in touch through social media ( Facebook, Instagram and Twitter #BikeOn #OntarioByBike) and look out for our first enewsletter early in 2018 where we will give you a preview of the 2018 Cycling in Ontario guide,  what spring shows and events to find us at and our summer tour destinations.

Thanks for staying tuned ...
