  • 13 Speech and Communication Problems That Affect Kids with Autism
  • Even when autistic people use language, they have a hard time communicating

Most people with autism (though by no means all) do have the ability to talk. In fact, some people with autism talk a great deal. Most of the time, though, people with autism talk differently from neurotypical people. Some of those differences relate to actual production and use of spoken language. Others related to non-verbal "body language" and other social cues. Still others are really about understanding and responding to cultural expectations.

What Is a Pragmatic Speech Delay?

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) describes pragmatic speech as having three components: Read on...

  • ABC Awards Full Season To Popular Autism Drama

  • A television drama centering on a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome is proving so popular with viewers that network executives are ordering up more.

After airing just two episodes, ABC said it is granting a full season to "The Good Doctor."

The hourlong drama focuses on Shaun Murphy, a young physician on the spectrum, who's medically gifted but struggles to connect to those around him. Read on...

  • Distinct changes mark brains of people with mutations tied to autism

  • Some people missing a copy of 16p11.2, a chromosomal region linked to autism, have unusually large brain structures, according to a new study. Those with an extra copy of the same region show the opposite pattern1.

For instance, the band of nerve fibers that connects the brain's two hemispheres is unusually thick in some people missing a copy of 16p11.2. The same band, called the corpus callosum, is abnormally thin in some people with an extra copy of the region.

People with the deletion and a thickened band have poor social and communication skills, whereas those with a duplication and a thin band score low on tests of intelligence. Read on...

  • Milan Fashion Week's Biggest Model Wants to Change the Way We Think About Asperger's
  • Few people had a busier Milan Fashion Week than Nina Marker, the Danish top model who has been present for the week's biggest events. Whether she was stomping down the runway with the supermodels at Versace, joining the crowd at Angela Missoni's 20th anniversary collection, or walking for Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi, Marker made her mark. Given her schedule, it would have been easy for Marker to focus solely on the job, but just before Max Mara, she used Instagram to deliver a hopeful message. Sporting a T-shirt that read "Bee Kind, I Have Autism," Marker reminded her followers that those on the neurodevelopmental disorder's spectrum are more than capable of achieving their dreams. "It's possible for us to be successful and have a good time," she wrote in the caption. "Stay safe and protect your mind."

Marker is passionate about using the platform afforded her by modeling to tackle meaningful issues. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 15 after experiencing issues with her education and personal life, Marker hopes that speaking out will bring about changes that can prevent others from going through similar difficulties. "It's important to me because the lack of [awareness] has created some issues in my life that maybe wouldn't have been there if my autism had been discovered earlier," says Marker, who found out she had Asperger's syndrome only after seeking out treatment for her mental health. "I went to a psychiatrist when I experienced a deep depression-which stemmed from my local education system handling my condition incorrectly." Due to the lack of programs in place to help children with autism, Marker faced an uphill battle at school. "There was still no support from the school or the systems behind it. This was rather damaging, since I didn't learn or pick up stuff the way the other kids did." Read on...

  • Parents and Others Looking for Help!!!

  • I am a single mom of 8 years old boy with autism who is looking for part time job to help me to get through my graduate program for Clinical Counseling. I worked as ABA behavior therapist for about a year, have extensive experience as a care provider for children with special needs, trained in RDI as well. In addition, I worked as art instructor for 12 years teaching children, typical and with special needs. I am wondering if anyone may need part-time help with their children. I have my son 50 % of the time and My availability is every Monday, Tuesday and every other Friday, Saturday and Sunday at any time. I live in Carmel Valley/Del Mar and planning to stay here.
    My phone number is 858/342-3118
    Thank you so much,
    Yulia Serebryakova

Looking for 1-2 roommates to share cute 2 bedroom 1 bath house in Encinitas with my sister, who is autistic and non-verbal, and her caretaker. My sister will be starting Supported Living in 6 months or more, so roommates(s) could move in now or later. Please email or call me for more information - Daria at 619-294-6577 or [email protected].

I am looking for an instructional aide to help my 6-year-old ADHD daughter in a private, Catholic school setting Monday-Friday 8am-12noon in Coronado. I would prefer someone with ABA knowledge. My daughter is a bright, spirited kid who needs lots of help staying on task and guidance and instruction on non-preferred actives (handwriting.) She is currently medicated but it is only taking us so far. She has behavioral issues we are working out. She needs someone who is strong and seasoned who will provide guidance and direction across all areas of the school setting; she is bossing around her current aide! Please contact me for info [email protected], or text 858-405-7264. Thank you for reading!

My family is a dual income family and we need additional help caring for our 15 y/o daughter who is high functioning Asperger. Specifically, we would like to find someone who can be at the house after school while we commute back from our jobs. It would be 3-5 days a week in the afternoons from 3-6pm. A certified professional behavioral coach would be preferred, but not mandatory.

Our schedules are moderately flexible and we work with the candidate to create a schedule that works for the both of us.
Thanks! please contact Dustin at [email protected]

  • The Independent Educational Evaluation: Leveling the Playing Field
  • thomas nelson

One of the least utilized tools by parents is the independent educational evaluation ("IEE"). This article will explain how the IEE will help "level the playing field" between you and the school district, so that your child can obtain the services they need.

A good evaluation is critical to educational planning. A good evaluation will help explain the nature of the problem(s) your child may be experiencing, help identify your child's strengths and weaknesses, provide invaluable information about your child's current needs, and offer guidance in choosing the services necessary to meet those needs. In short, a good special education evaluation is a critical tool in the Individualized Education Program ("IEP") process. Click here for all the info!

  • Book: Surviving the Cure

  • Surviving the Cure: Cancer was Easy,* Living is Hard is the humorously frank story of life after cancer and the challenges that face nearly every survivor, all rolled into one battered individual. I thought I knew cancer. After all, I'd lived it. And when I went into remission, I thought I was in the clear. It wouldn't be long before I could get back to a normal life and rejoin my friends. However, I soon learned cancer was only the beginning. Not long after I returned home, my lungs started failing. The cure was killing me. Extreme treatments prevented an all-but-certain death, but at great cost: 100 pounds of weight gain, emotional and mental trauma, and a bone disease for which joint replacements were the only fix. Though I was in physical and mental agony after my release from the hospital, I decided to try to piece together a life worth living. One where I could be happy, could joke about my condition, could have the best parking spots. Maybe even one day hold the supremely enviable world record for most joints replaced. But none of that could happen until I picked myself up. The only question was: could I?

  • Parents and Children Needed for Student Research

  • My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.

We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.

If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.

After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation. For further information, please contact Shamayne Brown at [email protected] or 619-416-1799. Thank you for your time.
