After airing just two episodes, ABC said it is granting a full season to "The Good Doctor."

| Distinct changes mark brains of people with mutations tied to autism |
| |
Some people missing a copy of 16p11.2, a chromosomal region linked to autism, have unusually large brain structures, according to a new study. Those with an extra copy of the same region show the opposite pattern1.
For instance, the band of nerve fibers that connects the brain's two hemispheres is unusually thick in some people missing a copy of 16p11.2. The same band, called the corpus callosum, is abnormally thin in some people with an extra copy of the region.
People with the deletion and a thickened band have poor social and communication skills, whereas those with a duplication and a thin band score low on tests of intelligence. Read on... |

| Milan Fashion Week's Biggest Model Wants to Change the Way We Think About Asperger's |

Few people had a busier Milan Fashion Week than Nina Marker, the Danish top model who has been present for the week's biggest events. Whether she was stomping down the runway with the supermodels at Versace, joining the crowd at Angela Missoni's 20th anniversary collection, or walking for Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi, Marker made her mark. Given her schedule, it would have been easy for Marker to focus solely on the job, but just before Max Mara, she used Instagram to deliver a hopeful message. Sporting a T-shirt that read "Bee Kind, I Have Autism," Marker reminded her followers that those on the neurodevelopmental disorder's spectrum are more than capable of achieving their dreams. "It's possible for us to be successful and have a good time," she wrote in the caption. "Stay safe and protect your mind."
Marker is passionate about using the platform afforded her by modeling to tackle meaningful issues. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 15 after experiencing issues with her education and personal life, Marker hopes that speaking out will bring about changes that can prevent others from going through similar difficulties. "It's important to me because the lack of [awareness] has created some issues in my life that maybe wouldn't have been there if my autism had been discovered earlier," says Marker, who found out she had Asperger's syndrome only after seeking out treatment for her mental health. "I went to a psychiatrist when I experienced a deep depression-which stemmed from my local education system handling my condition incorrectly." Due to the lack of programs in place to help children with autism, Marker faced an uphill battle at school. "There was still no support from the school or the systems behind it. I am a single mom of 8 years old boy with autism who is looking for part time job to help me to get through my graduate program for Clinical Counseling. I worked as ABA behavior therapist for about a year, have extensive experience as a care provider for children with special needs, trained in RDI as well. In addition, I worked as art instructor for 12 years teaching children, typical and with special needs. I am wondering if anyone may need part-time help with their children. I am looking for an instructional aide to help my 6-year-old ADHD daughter in a private, Catholic school setting Monday-Friday 8am-12noon in Coronado. I would prefer someone with ABA knowledge. My family is a dual income family and we need additional help caring for our 15 y/o daughter who is high functioning Asperger. Specifically, we would like to find someone who can be at the house after school while we commute back from our jobs. It would be 3-5 days a week in the afternoons from 3-6pm. Adults and families with children with autism can enjoy the Fleet's exhibit galleries in a quieter setting, an hour before regular open hours to the general public and with access to a special cool-off space. | Parents and Children Needed for Student Research |
| |
My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.
We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.
If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.
After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation.
