| A few more weeks of Farmers Market season |
Four of our county's markets stay open through October and while the mix of produce changes, there is still plenty of it. You are likely to find: apples, beans, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, eggplant, garlic, herbs, kale, lettuce, onions, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, spinach, squash, swiss chard, tomatoes, and turnips. In addition, the markets frequently have other food, such as maple syrup, honey, and baked goods, and also local wine and craft vendors.
- Canton - at the village park, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 2:00, all month
- Gouverneur - at the village park every Thursday from 9:00 to 2:00, all month
- Massena - at Danforth Place, Sundays 10:00 to 2:00 and Thursdays 11 to 6 - last day is October 12!
- Potsdam - at Ives Park every Saturday from 9:00 to 2:00, all month
Remember that debit and credit cards and SNAP EBT cards are welcome at all the farmers markets in St. Lawrence County.

Fight Hunger 5K Success! Thank you!
Thank you ALL for a wonderful turn out at last month's Fight Hunger 5K. We c
ertainly were lucky with the weather...maybe a little too lucky!
Congratulations to the committee, staff, and volunteers on pulling off a smooth-running and very successful event. We had 122 registered participants and, with sponsors and donations, we raised more than $10,000! All in all, we exceeded our goals, and we have a lot to be proud of. Thank you all.
Congratulations to Jess Prody, who was running her very first 5K and raised a total of $620 to win the top fundraiser prize. GardenShare Board President Carol Pynchon (left) presented the basket of local food prize to Jess.
The top fundraising team was the UU Stomping Out Hunger team, who raised a total of $1,892 for the effort.

Donors, Volunteers, Friends
Jenn Whittaker is Canton's farmer market manager, and she is also a vital GardenShare volunteer and supporter.
The Whittakers have long been interested in issues related to food policy and systems. "I've always been interested in how food gets to our plates," says Jenn. But their interest became more personal and focused when their children, Arianna (15) and Braden (12), each developed substantial food allergies. "It became even more important for us to understand where our food comes from, how it is produced."
The Whittakers first became aware of GardenShare when they moved to Canton from the Malone area about seven years ago. "We had friends who were involved, and we were given a Local Food Guide to help us know where to find locally grown food." She also remembers being delighted to find that she could use her credit or debit card to buy tokens to purchase produce at the farmers market.
As she learned more, she decided to get more involved. "This work is incredibly important," says Jenn. "Food is a necessity, people can't choose if they want to eat."

This Sunday! Corn Maze -
Head out to Hammond this Sunday for the
Community Corn Maze
at Red Tractor Farm, 8741 State Route 58! On Sunday October 1, they are generously donating $1 from every entrance fee to GardenShare. While your family has some fall fun, you'll also be supporting the work we do to strengthen the local food system and end hunger! The maze is open from 10-4. Some of our staff will be on hand if you want to learn more about what we do or get involved.
