Although it seems that the start of school was so long ago, there are still exciting things occurring as the school year falls in place -- relationships are being formed and learning is occurring.
Exciting things are also occurring with Alpha Delta State Ohio!
I look forward to the October 14th Executive Board Meeting and the introduction of state initiatives for the biennium. As promised at the State Convention, there will be some New Days, New Ways while continuing to pay homage to our traditions.
Of course this calls for a balancing act - and isn't achieving appropriate balances in our lives an ongoing effort? There are times that passionate and successful people have stretches in their lives when they do not have balance, but are guided through the short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. And so it is with organizations and our work within organizations.
As we look back at what matters in life, balance won't be at the top of the list but the relationships and achievements will matter and those happen because of a willingness, at times, to sacrifice balance.

Chapter Highlights
Chi Chapter, in the Hamilton area,
will award a $250 classroom grant to an area teacher with no more than five years of teaching experience. Great Support for an Early Educator!
Beta Kappa Chapter, in the Shelby County/Sidney area,
completed 10 projects in their Adopt-a-Classroom program last school year. Their president is encouraging each of the sisters of the chapter "to dare" and "to do" by engaging more actively in their chapter.
Delta Kappa Chapter, in northern Montgomery County
is continuing their support of a middle school in the Northridge District.
Gamma Phi Chapter, Cincinnati,
opened the program year with Patricia Burns, a member of the State Board of Education, speaking on The State of Public Schools in Ohio.
Several chapters are including a Member Spotlight in their newsletters as a way to better know their members.

Communication: A Two-Way Process
As the work of our chapters has begun for 2017-2018, it is important to keep in mind how important communication plays in success. Each chapter's personality can be seen through their means of communication. There is not a right way or a wrong way to share information -- just make sure communication is happening!
The same is true for Alpha Delta State; we must communicate with all members to maintain vitality. The main form of communication is in the monthly, electronic version of The Voice. Our goal is to provide relevant information and share ideas to help chapters. The officer team also welcomes comments as we tweak this publication to fit the needs of our members.

Is Your Chapter N.I.C.E.?
What is your chapter's "openness and friendliness" factor? Do you feel welcomed when attending meetings? Do other members/officers take the opportunity to listen and/or include you in the conservation? Are your interests and/or talents considered? Does the chapter get you involved in meaningful programs and activities? Or....do you feel unwanted and your ideas undervalued? Feeling
needed
and
valued
is a basic human necessity and is most certainly essential in the nurturing and growing of our chapters' memberships. To understand the reasons members drop DKG membership, chapters benefit from evaluating their "openness and friendliness" factor?

- Need: To be truly needed is an amazing feeling for a member. The chapter will have a committed member if this is sustained. However, the need to feel valued and supported must start as soon as the member joins and must continue through the years....usually a member who gets involved stays involved. Members who become less involved, start attending less, may feel their talents and contributions are no longer wanted or needed. "It takes a village"....well, it takes an entire chapter to make each individual member feel welcomed, supported and valued. Remember....a valued member is a happy member who becomes a potential leader!
- Involvement: It is so easy to get "caught up" in the moment and forget to look at other chapter members to see if all are participating and involved. Some members, may only want to be considered for a particular activity and/or responsibility (and that is OK) but at some point, all members need to be involved in something! Chapter leaders or chapter members should talk to indifferent members to identify their interests and talents plus invite them to take on (at first) minor responsibilities. Not all individuals find it easy to volunteer....some need to be asked and then asked again.
- Creativity: Members need to fulfill and develop their own creativity. Regardless of what the member may think, each has her own special talent/gift to share. Giving members the opportunity to express and grow talents will certainly benefit the entire chapter. Just learn what talent and strength each individual member possesses and then utilize and nurture it!
- Enjoyment: Each member must find her DKG membership rewarding as well as professionally beneficial. Chapters need to support a variety of programs, activities, fund-raising, collaborative efforts and community initiatives that will actively encourage and engage chapter members of diversified interests. And please, do not forget to add an element of fun. Be sure to offer benefits and services that potential members cannot get anywhere else. Maintain and encourage active participation at the chapter, state and International levels. Members who work hard and play hard together will enjoy and look forward to future chapter meetings, activities and even say "yes" to leadership commitments. But beware....if no one in the chapter seems to be having fun (including officers)....stop, look and pay attention....become aware of what is actually going on. Decide what is amiss and work in a positive manner to find a successful avenue to motivate and inspire your chapter members.
Look at your own chapter experience. How would you rate your chapter's "openness and friendliness" factor? And ask yourself, "Can engaging, maintaining and growing chapter membership be as simple as being
N.I.C.E.?

: Support for Early Career Educators
With the departure of a large number of veteran teachers and many teachers leaving the profession within their first five years, educators supporting educators is crucial for retention and success. As much is expected of a new teacher on the first day of school as of a 30-year veteran.
SEE encourages members/chapters to be creative in support of early-career educators with a variety of strategies, such as
* give support with phone calls and visits
* help with lesson plans and bulletin board ideas
- * make copies of worksheets or other materials
- * offer advice on classroom management and parent-teacher relations
* providing support in appropriate and practical ways.
Get a list of new teachers/educators from your local school district in your area to support.

IN MEMORY OF DR. THERESA A. FECHEK, Ph.D.

THERESA A. FECHEK, PhD
With the passing of Theresa A. Fechek, PhD on September 5, 2017, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International lost one of its most devoted and caring members.
A native of Pennsylvania, Theresa received her degree in elementary education in 1956 from Clarion State Teachers College. She taught one year in Hartford, Connecticut, prior to her employment by the school system in Garfield Heights, Ohio. In 1964 Theresa was initiated into Sigma Chapter (OH). While working in Garfield Heights, Theresa completed a Master's Degree in Education at Case Western Reserve University. When Theresa moved to Columbus to work on her PhD in English Literature and Linguistics at The Ohio State University, she transferred her chapter membership in 1968 to Gamma Omicron Chapter. Following the conferring of her degree, Theresa accepted a position at the University of Rhode Island where she taught for seven years. She transferred to Epsilon Chapter (RI) where she served in several leadership roles.
In 1977 Society Headquarters in Austin, Texas beckoned. Theresa served as Coordinator of Program Services from 1977 - 1984; Acting Executive Director from 1984 - 1987; and from 1987 - 2001 as Executive Coordinator.
In 2002 Theresa was awarded the International Achievement Award for her tireless work on behalf of the Society. Theresa retired in 2001 and the following year moved to Beavercreek, Ohio to be closer to her brother, Frank. She transferred her membership to Delta Kappa Chapter where she remained an active member, participating at both chapter and state levels of the Society until her death. She is survived by her brother and her sister, Ursula.
Dr. Fechek will be sadly missed by all of us who had the opportunity to work with her and know her as the kind, gentle, and friendly person she was.

LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

Leadership Management Seminar
The Golden Gift Fund Leadership Management Seminar will be held July 1-13, 2018, at The University of Texas - Austin. The seminar is offered to all members to develop leadership, communications and management skills. The award covers all but a $600 registration fee for which participants are responsible. Electronically submitted applications are due by December 1, 2017. The application and information can be found at

Ohio members rave about the training and keep in touch with their classmates from the seminar. The most recent Ohio participants were Eileen McNally in 2014 and Ann Todd in 2012.

Alpha Delta State Ohio Educational Foundation was brought into existence by you, the members of Alpha Delta State Ohio. Since then, the Directors have been working diligently to make the Foundation work for your benefit! Now, ADSOEF is looking for visual identity and needs your help! We are seeking current members who can design a creative, innovative and professional logo design. The logo should be visually appealing, recognizable and help promote what the Foundation represents. The winner of this contest will receive public recognition as well as recognition among peers within Alpha Delta State Ohio Educational Foundation at the 2018 Convention.

Help For Our Sisters
Our Delta Kappa Gamma sisters in Texas, Florida, and now Puerto Rico have experienced severe losses to their homes and their schools from the recent hurricanes. You can donate to the Delta Kappa Gamma Emergency Fund using Form 43 at www.dkg.org.
The Texas State Organization also has a campaign for Member-to-Member ($80) and Campus Helping Hands. Information:

To date, no word has been received from our Puerto Rico sisters.
