High Potential/Gifted Program
October 13, 2017

Welcome to the first edition of the High Potential/Gifted Newsletter for the 2017-2018 School Year!  A brief glance at what is happening in the gifted world, the newsletter will be sent automatically to parents of our identified High Potential/Gifted students to share information and resources in regards to gifted education.

This issue features our revised elementary enrichment programs and a look into what the term Twice Exceptional means and how it relates to giftedness.

Elementary Enrichment Programs

We are pleased to announce that the district has hired two Enrichment Facilitators to deliver the reading and math enrichment programs in our elementary schools. This provides a trained person in the curriculum who can deliver a consistent and reliable gifted curriculum to our high potential students.

At Taylors Falls Elementary, the enrichment facilitator is Christine Lundberg.  "I am beginning my fifth year of leading enrichment classes for the Chisago Lake School District.  I love working with children and sharing my passion for learning.  My husband and I have two daughters, ages 27 and 13.  I enjoy volunteering in our community and spending time with my family boating, skiing, camping and traveling. "

At Primary and Lakeside Elementary Schools, Stefanie Anderson is the enrichment facilitator.  " I am excited for this new opportunity and delighted to work with your child this year!  I live in Lindstrom, MN with my wonderful husband and our three energetic children, ages 7, 6, and 4.  When not in the classroom or busy at home, I enjoy trail and ultra-running, hiking, boating, hockey... and of course MATH and READING!"

In addition, we have adopted a new math curriculum for enrichment.  In grades K-2 it is called Project M2 - Mentoring Young Mathematicians. In grade 3, it is called M3 - Mentoring Mathematical Minds.  Look to our next newsletter for information on this curriculum.

We are excited to see these programs grow and your children learn and flourish with these changes. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Schmidt, Director of Curriculum at [email protected].

Twice Exceptional (2e)

Twice exceptional, or 2e (or 2E), refers to individuals  who are gifted in terms of their intellectual capabilities, and who also have learning differences or other challenges, such as ADHD or Asperger's, that make it difficult for them to achieve up to their full potential.

This unique combination of gifts and challenges often results in these children not being identified in either category, or only being identified in one or the other.  Often children learn to use their giftedness to mask the learning disability. In other cases, the learning disability is the focus and parents and educators miss their giftedness.

Common Strengths of 2e children: Creativity, Sense of Humor, Wide Range of Interests, Advanced Ideas and Robust Vocabulary

Common Challenges of 2e children: Argumentative, Sensitive to Criticism, Frustration, Poor Organization and Study Skills, and Difficulty in Social Situations
