Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

USDA Best Practices Award Winners

The Georgia School Nutrition Association's Kick-Off luncheon celebrates accomplishments for school nutrition departments across the state, but it is also a time for training. Pamela LeFrois, Director of School Nutrition and Nicole Trunk, Coordinator of School Nutrition for Barrow County were presenters at the annual training event. The title of their topic was "Promoting your Program through the use of Social Media." Barrow County won the Best Practice in the 2016-2017 school year for use of Social Media. Visit their Facebook page.

Barrow County received two awards: the first was for the "Farm to School" program. This award focused on the creation of a Farm to School Booster Club as a place for local community members, farmers, parents, teachers, and school nutrition to network and "Grow" our school gardens in Barrow County schools.

The second award was presented for "Increasing Participation in School Lunch, School Breakfast, or Afterschool Snacks". Barrow County received this award based on a project Charlotte Parks, manager at Haymon Morris Middle School, and her staff did which highlighted days of color during National School Lunch Week 2016. The staff highlighted a different color each day of the week by offering as many foods as possible of the featured color on the menu. The staff dressed in the same color as the highlighted food.

BCSS was honored to be joined at the table by Representative Terry England, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Barrow County School Superintendent Chris McMichael, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance, Jennifer Houston and Ellen Petree, School and Community Relations specialist for Barrow County Schools. School Nutrition personnel in attendance were: Pamela LeFrois, Director ; Nicole Trunk, Coordinator; Carol Bales, Manager of Sims Academy; Judy Mauldin, Asst. Manager, Russell Middle School.
Media Recognition

Ellen Petree, Barrow County's School and Community Relations Specialist was nominated for Georgia School Nutrition Association's media award.

Ellen is one of the best supporters when it comes to promoting School Nutrition in the Barrow County School System. She constantly includes school nutrition employees in events happening in the school system and community. Ellen was instrumental in promoting the Barrow County school nutrition program during our "Fill the Bowl" event on Election Day, 2016.

Selected for Service

Russell Middle School students  Kelly Coles and Brody Jackson have been chosen for the 2017-2018 Student Advisory Council.
State School Superintendent Richard Woods selected 142 Georgia students to serve on his Council. Throughout the school year, these middle and high school students will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom. Members of the Student Advisory Council will also discuss other issues related to education, serve as the Superintendent's ambassadors to their respective schools, and participate in service projects to benefit schools and students.

"Every year, it is so valuable to hear directly from students through my Student Advisory Council," Superintendent Woods said. "In the past, we have made direct changes based on student feedback, and I look forward to working with these students who I know will make an impact. I'm so grateful for every student who took the time to apply and share their thoughts."
