 2017/18 Campaign kicked off at the Stephen E. Garner Day of Caring

2017-18 Chair of the Board J.R Clairborne & UWTC CEO/President James Brown

J. R. Clairborne, United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC) Chair of the Board, welcomed a community members to Stewart Park  for the 15th Annual Stephen E. Garner Day of Caring and the 2017-18 Community Campaign Kickoff. James Brown, President of UWTC, shared his remarks on how UWTC makes a difference in people's lives and thanked the community for its generous support of the Day of Caring Food Drive and for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, which produced two semi-loads of supplies for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Brown also presented three videos by Well Said Media highlighting the impact of various programs supported by the funds raised through the UWTC annual campaign.

 

Campaign Co-Chairs Heather McDaniel and John Rudd and Cayuga Health Services shared that United Way's programs are focused on improving education, financial stability and health throughout the community. Last year, 22,537 people received United Way funded services, which is 1 in 5 residents of Tompkins County.
McDaniel and Rudd joined by James Brown, Jason Moore, Matt Forney, and J.R Clairborne announced this year's Community Campaign goal of $1,933,184.

UWTC Fall Grant Cycle Open to Tompkins County Non-Profits

United Way of Tompkins County has opened the following grant applications in Apricot: Community Care Fund - Stage 1, Fall Hunger & Food Security, and Youth & Philanthropy. UWTC is inviting eligible organizations across Tompkins County to apply for funding through Apricot, our online grant platform. Additional information and details regarding our grant policies and funding parameters can be found on our website.

United Way of Tompkins County helps people meet their immediate, basic needs while creating lasting change by strengthening the three building blocks for a good life: education, financial stability and health.

EDUCATION: Children and youth succeed in school, work and life.
FINANCIAL STABILITY: Individuals and families have improved financial stability and self-sufficiency.
HEALTH: Children, seniors and adults have improved physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Cornell University Homecoming 5k



The Homecoming 5K is a fun run that is open to the public on  Saturday, October 21 at 8:30AM .  All ages are invited to participate. The 3.1-mile course will loop through the beautiful F. R. Newman Arboretum. Online registration is $15 before October 13, and you get a Homecoming T-shirt. After October 13, registration at the venue goes up to $20, and the shirt is not guaranteed. Proceeds from the run will go to UWTC.

Meet our 2017-18 Community Campaign Chairs!

2017-18 Community Campaign Chairs Heather McDaniel and John Rudd

Heather McDaniel is the Vice President and Director of Economic Development Services of Tompkins County Area Development and also serves as a board member to United Way.Heather McDaniel is Vice President and Director of Economic Development Services at Tompkins County Area Development where she helps businesses access the resources they need to start, stay and grow in Ithaca and Tompkins County. She is the administrative director of the Tompkins County Development Corporation and the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency. She also administers a $1.8 million loan fund that assists manufacturing and high tech start up companies access capital to expand. She has delivered incentives to companies that invested over $245 million in the community in the past five years.

Prior to joining TCAD in 2007, Heather was a senior planner in the Tompkins County Planning Department for five years where she administered affordable housing and economic development programs, and provided staff support to the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council.

Heather has a Master's degree in Urban Planning from New York University and a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), certified Economic Development Finance Professional, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Heather is a member of the Board of Trustees at The Sciencenter and the Board of Directors for the United Way of Tompkins County. She lives in Ithaca with her daughters, Olivia and Alex.

John Rudd is the President and CEO of Cayuga Medical Center. John has been involved with UWTC for 22 years as a volunteer, board member, and now as an Emeritus Director. John has also served as Chair of the UWTC Board.John Rudd became President and CEO of Cayuga Medical Center in January of 2013. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Cayuga Medical Center from 2002-2012 and has had operational responsibilities for the majority of the clinical and support areas. From 1996 through 2002, he served as the Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. In addition, he has responsibility for the coordination of the Cayuga Area Plan physician hospital organization and all payer and employer contracts for the CAP network.

Before his work with Cayuga Medical Center, John served as the Vice President of Finance at Sisters Hospital in Buffalo from 1992-1996. From 1986-1992, John was the Senior Manager for Coopers & Lybrand in their upstate New York health care consulting practice, where his primary focus was on financial analysis and planning. He also served as a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Whinney in Syracuse from 1984-1986.

John has been active on numerous health care organizations committees that include: Vizient/VHA, Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), Iroquois Health, as well as a number of community board leadership positions that include: CNY AHEC, HWNY, Tompkins County Area Development, The Racker Centers, OAR, United Way, Kendall at Ithaca, The Reconstruction Home/Beachtree Care Center, Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, and Challenge Industries.

John received his MBA in Health Care Administration from Union College in Schenectady, NY, graduating in 1984.and his Bachelors of Science in biology, with a business minor, from St. Bonaventure graduating in 1980.

2017-18 Pacesetter Highlights
 
Pacesetter Chairs Matt Forney and Jason Moore

Pacesetter Co-Chairs Jason Moore of Tompkins Trust Company and Matt Forney of Tompkins Financial Advisors reported that the 32 Pacesetter organizations that "set the pace" by running United Way campaigns prior to the Day of Caring are seeing positive results. Many are Corporate Cornerstone Partners who generously support UWTC's administrative and operating expenses, allowing 100 percent of all donations to the Community Care Fund to go directly into local programs and services. 

Pacesetter Highlights:

CFCU established a new company record this year for the total amount raised! They achieved an 11.4% increase in employee giving and a 17% increase in campaign participation.

Foodnet: Meals on Wheels maintained 100% participation again this year and increased their overall giving by over 50%!

Target had almost a 20% increase in employee giving this year along with an increase in participation!

Human Services Coalition increased their overall giving by over 15% from last year!

Cayuga Medical Center, Sciarabba Walker, Tompkins Trust, and Wegmans have all exceeded their goals and seen an increase in participation this year.
Ithaca College Alumni Weekend with Wine and Design


 From  November 3rd - 5th , Wine & Design will host a fundraiser for Ithaca College's Alumni Weekend with 25% of all proceeds donated to United Way of Tompkins County!
