Our fifty-year+ members will be honored on Heritage Sunday, but we won't reveal here all the special plans for Sunday, October 29.  However, to further the Celebration, we are  asking you all to share some memories of your times as a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church.

Who was pastor when you first joined OPC?  Who was in the congregation with you?  What was life like in Oxford at that time?  What has changed about the buildings, services, and traditions? How has being a member of OPC influenced you?  Please share your memories.

We'll include these memories in the next several issues of the newsletter.  The deadline for the November issue is October 20, but don't let that stop you from sending me something. Send our editor what you have even if it's after this date.  Call 523-6003 to dictate a story, send email to moeckenj@miamioh.edu or drop a note in Nancy's mailbox at the church.  We are waiting to hear from YOU.
Fall Cleanup
The Trustees have selected Saturday, November 4 from 10-12 as the annual fall cleanup.  We will rake the Memorial and Seminary properties as well as pick up the gazillion acorns that we have been blessed with this year.  It is getting harder for those church members who traditionally do most of the work to continue.  We are hoping for a few new younger, stronger volunteers to help.  We need rakes, gloves and assistance.  Pizza will be provided at noon for the workers.  Please RSVP to Lisa Brunckhorst via email or at 523-1241 to give some idea of the number of people we can plan on.
Our Faith in Action

Meet Tanner...

Some of you have heard Mary Shinn's request for prayers for Tanner Young, his brother Owen Young and their mother, Nichole Smith.  Tanner's story was also shared with the youth group.  Tanner and his brother were recently reunited with their mother and moved into nearby Trenton, Ohio.  Tanner was enrolled to start his 9th grade at Edgewood High School but before school started, he fell sick.  The doctors thought he had strep throat but after completing some tests, determined he needed to be admitted to ICU as Tanner did not have strep throat.  He was diagnosed with a staph infection, pneumonia, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.  Due to having to take care of Tanner, his mother lost two jobs.

Since I last requested your prayers for this family, Tanner has moved out of ICU but remains in the hospital where he is receiving chemotherapy.

Your continued prayers are needed for Tanner and his family.  OPC has already provided prayer shawls for this family.  Members of our youth group will be standing at the doors at the end of worship Sunday for anyone who would like to financially help the family during this time of crisis.  We have a limited number of Tanner Strong bracelets available if you would like to take one as you make a contribution to help this family.

The youth group and any other congregation members who would like to demonstrate support for Tanner, his family, and for any others who have been affected by cancer in their lives, can join us in Cincinnati on Thursday, October 19th to walk in the  "Light Up the Night" to be held in Yeatman's Cove.  ( No school for Talawanda students on the following Friday, October 20th.) The walk begins at 7 PM wit h additional "festivities" starting at 5:00Tanner's team is called "Tanner's Warriors" and is headed by his mother Nichole Smith. The purpose of the walk is to raise funds for research and is a means of showing support for cancer survivors and those struggling with this horrible disease now.   The youth group will meet at OPC at 5 PM on October 19th to share rides.  We will need volunteers to drive.  ahead of time for a t-shirt and additional information.

The Youth Group invites you to join them in mission as we share the love of God with Tanner and his family.

In the Church Library
Is there a tension between faith and science?  Does faith provide a context for scientific discoveries? In the October 9th edition of The Presbyterian Outlook, a geologist, pastor, neurologist, seminary professor and healthcare ethicist share perspectives on the vital and generative intersection of faith and science.  Next time you're in the church library, take a moment to read any of the feature articles written by Presbyterians from across the nation.

Your Stewardship Matters
There cannot be a surer rule,
nor a stronger exhortation  to the observance of it,
than when we are taught that all the endowments which we possess
are divine deposits entrusted to us for the very purpose of
being distributed for the good of our neighbor.
