Message from Dr. Spurka
2017 SAT Scores
This week the Georgia Department of Education released SAT scores for all schools in Georgia. These scores were generated by our recently graduated seniors, the Class of 2017, who took the SAT during their senior year. Overall Cambridge had 292 seniors take the SAT during their senior year out of 504 members of the class.

Last year's SAT looked different than in previous years. The College Board, which designs and administers the test, released a new version of the test during the 2015-2016 school year. Our students took the new SAT for the first time in March 2016. The new test has two sections (Evidence-Based Reading/Writing and Math); whereas, the previous SAT had three sections ( Critical Reading, Writing, and Math). Both the new and old SAT have an optional essay. Scoring for the SAT also changed. The old SAT had an overall score of 2400 while the new SAT has an overall score of 1600.

O ur 2017 score is 1155 which is a 30-point increase from last year.  Because of the differences between the old SAT and the new SAT, College Board officials caution against comparing this year's results to that of previous years. We feel that our score is a good starting point for our school, and we will continue to make progress as students get used to taking the test in its new format. We also will continue our PSAT testing for students in grades 9, 10, and 11 to help strengthen their academic preparation and to identify personal strengths and weaknesses before they take the SAT. All students in grade 9, 10, and 11 will take the PSAT at school on October 11, 2017 (a half day for all students).

While the SAT does not impact students' grades or academic standing, it is a predictor of student performance after high school, and the results hold value for our school. We encourage students to consider taking college entrance exams like the SAT and ACT, so they can be exposed to challenging, thought-provoking questions that measure what they have learned throughout their high school career.
Graduation data shows Fulton is tops in metro area

Class of 2017 graduation rates released September 27 show that Fulton County Schools is continuing its upward trend in getting more students to graduate on time. With a 2017 rate of 86.8%, Fulton also has the highest graduation rate of the large school systems in metro Atlanta and reported an increase of 0.2% over the 2016 rate of 86.6%.

PSAT and SAT at Cambridge
October 11
PSAT
Cambridge will administer the PSAT to all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. The test will begin when the school day begins at 8:20 am, and students should report to their advisement classroom. Please make sure your student arrives at school on time and is well rested for the test. Students arriving late, after 8:40 am, will not be able to join their testing group and will report to the
cafeteria . Please note that students cannot be checked out during the testing period.

SAT
Cambridge is participating in the College Board's SAT Day. Seniors
who have confirmed their participation will need to arrive at 7: 30 am and report to the Auxiliary Gym. The test will be administered from 8:00 am until 12:30 pm.

* Seniors - you have four "Free Score Sends" for this administration. Students will have until 11:59 pm on October 2
7, 2017, to submit your four "Free Score Sends." Many colleges see these reports as an indicator of student interest, which they value highly. Make sure you log into your college board account and utilize this resource.

Reminders for test day:
  • Arrive on campus between 7:30 - 7:45 am
  • Testing will begin promptly at 8:00 am.
You must have a valid photo ID

  • Students will be dismissed once all materials have been collected and verified.
  • Test scores will be reported in December.
  • Note, students cannot be checked out during the testing period.
Cambridge Theatre

Cambridge Theatre presents The Diviners (our one act competition selection) next Tuesday, October 3 and Wednesday, October 4 evening at 7:00 pm.  The play is only 55 minutes, and we would love to have you in the audience!

"This marvelously theatrical play is the story of a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930s. When the boy was young, he almost drowned. This trauma and the loss of his mother in the same accident has left him deathly afraid of water. The preacher, set on breaking away from a long line of Kentucky family preachers, is determined not to do what he does best. He works as a mechanic for the boy's father. The town doesn't have a preacher, and the women try to persuade him to preach - while he tries to persuade the child to wash. When the preacher finally gets the boy in the river and is washing him, the townspeople mistake the scene for a baptism. They descend on the event and, in the confusion, the boy drowns."

Can my 14 and 16 year old stay home alone overnight?
Guidelines about supervision
Each year, the school is informed about minors staying home alone overnight.  Below are the guidelines provided by Child Protective Services for the amount of time and ages children may be left unsupervised or supervised by a child under 18 years old.

1.    Children eight (8) years and under should never be left alone.

2.  Children between the ages of nine (9) and twelve (12) may be left alone for brief periods of time (less than two (2) hours) when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker.  Children between 9 and 12 years old may not supervise other children or younger siblings.

3.  Children ages thirteen (13) and older may be left alone and may perform the role of the babysitter as authorized by the parent/caretaker.  It is advisable to limit this time to twelve (12) hours or less and only when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker.  Minor children may not be left alone overnight.  It is also suggested that those children over the age of thirteen (13) caring for others should have participated in a course on babysitting.

4.  Older children with special conditions or disabilities should not be left home alone.

All children should know:

1.  The family emergency plan.  (Fire escapes, 911, etc.)

2.  How to demonstrate the emergency plan.

3.  Where the parent's phone numbers are for work and home, their home address, and how to give directions to emergency personnel.

4.  Support systems in place, in case a parent cannot be reached.  (Relatives or neighbors available.)

5.  Whom to contact if there are language or cultural factors affecting the situation.

As much as they may complain about it, minor children-even youth must have an adult monitoring their care while their parents are away.  If you have any further questions, please contact Stephanie Schuette, the School Social Worker at this school.

Cambridge Baseball Dinner and Auction
Tuesday, November 7, 2017
Dear Cambridge Community,

We would like to extend to you an invitation to play in our 4th Annual "Bears & Birdies Golf Classic". This great event will be held on Tuesday, November 7th at the beautiful Manor Golf & Country Club. This fundraising event is our single largest fundraiser and source of funds for Cambridge Baseball's Capital Improvements. With your contributions, generous donations, and participation, this fundraising event will help us build one of the finest Batting Facilities in the State of Georgia.

Our golf event has sold out every year and everyone has a great time.  We will also have an abundance of Silent and Live Auction Items that you can bid on.  This event is fun, but more importantly, your participation will help fuel the future success of the Cambridge Baseball Program.

If you cannot play golf but would like to participate by either donating items for the Silent and Live Auctions, sponsoring a hole, or attending the dinner, please email our Diamond Club:    [email protected]

Thank you for your support!
