The Tiger's Roar!
Your Community Brief from Jones High School
Friday, September 29, 2017

It's hard to believe that today is the final school day for the month of September 2017 - a month that we will all remember for some time to come. If you are a member of the Jones High School family and are still trying to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma, we are here to help you (see below).

Printed Progress Reports went home with students on Monday. Now is the time to take action. Please do not wait until the week of October 13 when Report Card grades are due. We offer free tutoring on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 4:00pm and on select Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:00am. Students are fed and have the opportunity to earn incentives and Jones gear for their participation. Tutoring Information

I would also like to thank you for reading these weekly community briefs. Kindly remember that we have several social media sites that are continuously updated during the week with the very latest Jones news (see links at bottom). If you have yet to visit one of our social media sites, I encourage you to do so.

We look forward to seeing our students, parents, community members and the BEST alumni in the land at our Homecoming activities next week. Please see the detailed schedule below.

Khan Academy

Jones High School is participating in the second annual SAT Practice All-In Challenge designed by the Council of the Great City Schools and College Board. Last school year, OCPS was recognized as one of the top five school districts in the challenge.

Our very own Alyssa Wilson received a $500.00 scholarship for increasing her SAT score through Khan Academy practice!

Let's see some more Tigers win scholarship money! We encourage everyone to create a Khan Academy account (if you haven't done so already) and spend a minimum of 30 minutes per day on Official SAT practice. You can even do it from your phone! The SAT All-In Challenge began on September 18, 2017 and ends on May 5, 2018.

Hurricane Irma Relief

These past few weeks have been difficult for many in our community. Please know that our school counselors have been serving students and staff, and they will continue doing so as long as there is the need.

Parents, if you're concerned about your child, you can request counseling services by contacting your school principal or counselor. You may also find some resources on this website: http://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources/school-safety-and-crisis

Community Support

We would like to thank all of the individuals and community partners who donated relief items for our families displaced by Hurricane Irma.

Special thanks to U.S. Army JROTC Instructor LTC Jonathan Watson for reaching out to his Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. It's always fun to watch them pull on to campus but this time was especially neat, as they brought hundreds of hygiene and household items to help students affected by Hurricane Irma. We greatly appreciate your generosity and continued support of Jones High School!

Friday's Motivational Moment

NEVER GIVE UP

Born into poverty, Abraham Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.

He could have quit many times - but he didn't and because he didn't quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the United States history.

Here is a sketch of Lincoln's road to the White House:
  • 1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
  • 1818 His mother died.
  • 1831 Failed in business.
  • 1832 Ran for state legislature - lost.
  • 1832 Also lost his job - wanted to go to law school but couldn't get in.
  • 1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
  • 1834 Ran for state legislature again - won.
  • 1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
  • 1836 Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
  • 1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated.
  • 1840 Sought to become elector - defeated.
  • 1843 Ran for Congress - lost.
  • 1846 Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
  • 1848 Ran for re-election to Congress - lost.
  • 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected.
  • 1854 Ran for Senate of the United States - lost.
  • 1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party's national convention - gets less than 100 votes.
  • 1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again - again he lost.
  • 1860 Elected president of the United States.

Have a nice weekend Tigers. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning at tutoring!
