JAZZ SAFARI TO CUBA!
I just got back from Varadero Cuba and had a perfect trip - my favourite resort is The Sanctuary at Grand Memories Varadero and after taking our International Jazz Safari donors there for the past two years, I'm happy to say it is business as usual over there.

After reading about various hurricanes I'm happy to report there is absolutely no sign of damage to anything...friends who work at the Sanctuary said there were a few minor repairs and that everything was fixed within four days. Impressive!

The Sunwing plane was full - and the resort was bustling as usual. The staff I spoke with (who feel like family at this point) were super excited to know we will be back with over 100 donors once again early in the New Year. The local musicians too, are looking forward to jamming with Jane Bunnett and all the other wonderful musicians who will join us.

On top of the incredible jazz you will see live, I also program music by the pool so you are more likely to hear "Soul Sauce" than "Who Let The Dogs Out".

I met with the various people in charge of this resort to plan the next trip for our donors - the biggest and best yet - International Jazz Safari to Cuba that is set for January 21-28, 2018. There are still a handful of spots for singles and doubles...info at www.jazz.fm

Of course it is likely that we'll visit Cuba again but this is the last time we are doing an event of this size in Varadero. About half of those signed up so far attended in the past year or two - which speaks volumes about what a fantastic, memorable adventure this is. In case you don't know we take over The Sanctuary - an adults only section of the hotel - and have private dining, club house, pool and concerts for our one week stay.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
For many listeners, there are two Sonny Rollins’s. One is the early Rollins who recorded some of the best jazz albums of the 1950’s and 60’s, including Saxophone Colossus, Way Out West, and The Bridge. Then there is the later Rollins. By 1966, Rollins had grown frustrated with the materialism of American society. He took a six year sabbatical from recording, during which he travelled to India in search of spiritual enlightenment. After studying yoga and meditation at an ashram near Bombay, Rollins returned to America, where he signed a contract with Milestone Records.

The music that Rollins recorded for Milestone over the next three decades divided his fans. Instead of the acoustic jazz of his youth, Rollins recorded with electric instruments and borrowed from funk, disco, and even country music. While detractors accused Rollins of bowing to commercial pressure, Rollins insisted he was just making music that interested him. The best tracks he made during this period are collected in the compilation album, Silver City. The highlight of the collection is “Tennessee Waltz”, a cover of the song popularized by Patti Page.

MARILYN MUNROE HELPED ELLA FITZGERALD BREAK INTO STARDOM

On March 15, 1955, Ella Fitzgerald opened her initial engagement at the Mocambo nightclub in Hollywood, after Marilyn Monroe lobbied the owner for the booking. The booking was instrumental in Fitzgerald's career. It had previously been widely reported that Fitzgerald was the first black performer to play the Mocambo, following Monroe's intervention, but this is not true. African-American singers Herb Jeffries, Eartha Kitt, and Joyce Bryant all played the Mocambo in 1952 and 1953, according to stories published at the time in Jet magazine and Billboard. But what it did do, was bring Ella to a new audience. Next up was the classic Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book, released in 1956, the first of eight Songbook sets Ella would record for Verve.

Ella Fitzgerald said in MS Magazine in 1972, "I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt. Its because of her that, I played Mocambo. She personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. And Marilyn was there, front table, every night."

JAZZ PROSE:
ALBERT AYLER

A Line of Sight

By force of sound,
Sonny Murray starts things off,
His drums clearing the way,
Removing obstacles and distractions.
Albert, armed with only a Tenor Sax,
Walked his own unbalanced path,
Through dreams and disarray,
His shrieking dissonance,
Keeping demons at bay,
Making a tunnel of noise,
To protect himself from harm,
From ghosts and malice,
From solitude and lack,
To emerge intact and safe,
On the other side,
Tall as a mountain,
Strong and proud, in the divisive,
indifferent world he navigated.
