LAKE OF THE ISLES

LUTHERAN CHURCH

 OCTOBER

   2017

REFORMATION - 500th ANNIVERSARY

Dear Friends and Members of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church,

The Luther Rose or Seal is the most widely recognized symbol for Lutheranism. It was the seal that was designed for Martin Luther at the request of the Saxon Elector John Frederick in 1530. It was always, however, more than a symbol.  It colorfully and poignantly portrayed Luther's theology.  Luther wrote the following description from Coburg Castle on July 8th, 1530.

Since you ask whether my seal has come out correctly, I shall answer most amiably and tell you of those thoughts which now come to my mind about my seal as a symbol of my theology.  There is first to be a cross, black, and placed in a heart, which should be of its natural color (red), to put me in mind that faith in Christ crucified saved us. For if one believes from the heart, he will be justified. Such a heart is to be in the midst of a white rose, to symbolize that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace.  In a word, it places the believer into a white joyful rose, for this faith does not give peace and joy as the world gives. This rose, moreover, is fixed in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that such joy in the Spirit and in faith is a beginning of the future heavenly joy.  It is already a part of faith, and is grasped through hope, even though not yet manifest. And around this field is a golden ring, to signify that such bliss in heaven is endless, and more precious than all joys and goods, just as gold is the most valuable and precious metal.

Nine years ago, in preparation for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the United Lutheran Churches in Germany decided to create a new living monument.  They believed it wasn't necessary to erect yet another statue, so instead, they decided to create a living garden of 500 trees reaching out from the Luther Rose. The photo above is a picture of the garden looking down along paths lined with hundreds of trees.  The paths go out in all directions, of coursing depicting the movement of Protestantism which has now reached every continent.  More importantly, I believe that Luther would state that it is Jesus Christ, at the center of the heart and rose, that has gone out to reach the ends of the earth.

It is an important reminder to the Lutheran Church today.  For this is ultimately the Protestant heritage. The good news which Martin Luther rediscovered and celebrated  was the saving grace of Jesus Christ freely given for all.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

SPEAKER SERIES ON "WORKING"
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15TH
10:45 A.M.
"Working" is the theme of a speaker series that began this summer and will continue running once a month through the course of the next year. It's inspired by the Studs Terkel book of that name in which "people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do." Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work. This series gives us an opportunity to learn more about our members and the work they are involved in.

The next segment of the series will be on Sunday, October 15th and will feature Lake of the Isles Lutheran member, Deb Gilroy.

Deb is an adjunct voice professor at Hamline University and Minneapolis Community and Technical College and maintains a private voice studio from her home in the Kenwood neighborhood. She also sings professionally as a Dramatic Soprano in solo as well as ensemble productions.

Deb's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 20 minutes will be an informal talk by Deb about her work...leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.

SERVICE OF PRAYER AND HEALING
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22
The Sunday nearest to October 18th , the Festival Day for St. Luke is often marked as a day for special services for healing.  St. Luke is referred to in scripture as the "Great Physician" and in medieval times he was the patron saint doctors and surgeons.  Numerous hospitals across the United States are named after St. Luke.

The service for Prayer and Healing will be a part of the Prayers of the Church and anointing of oil will occur during Holy Communion.

CONFIRMATION SUNDAY
OCTOBER 29
In many Lutheran churches the Confirmation worship service is known as the Affirmation of Baptism.  The name recalls the promises that were made by the parents and godparents at the time of a child's baptism.  They vowed that the Christian faith would be a child's one day, and that they would speak on behalf of the child until that day comes.  The Rite of Affirmation is that coming of age for the young adult.   It is also a day for a renewal of the faith through the laying on of hands and the giving of the Holy Spirit. On Reformation Sunday, October 29th we will celebrate confirmation with Alexis Jacoby.

The worship service will be highlighted by J. S. Bach's Reformation cantata, "The Lord Our God is Sun and Shield."  The work for first performed on Reformation Day
in Leipzig in 1725.
ST. MARTINSFEST DINNER
NOVEMBER 11TH

Mark your calendars for the annual St. Martinsfest Dinner which will be held on November 11th.  Don Holzschuh will prepare another delicious meal for us and there will be entertainment.  More details will follow.
JOIN THE LOTI CHOIR

... IN LOTI'S FESTIVAL CHOIR!

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, you are invited and encouraged to join the choir in presenting Bach's cantata "The Lord God is both our Sun and our Shield".  Written in 1725 for the Reformation Festival, the cantata is based on the splendid Lutheran Hymn, "Our God is a Mighty God". Vocal soloists and a full instrumental ensemble will join the choir in performing the cantata during the worship service on Reformation Sunday, October 29th.

The choir is in need of voices to fill out the ensemble and urges you to join us for four Wednesday night rehearsals prior to the 29th.  This is not a lifetime commitment....but an invitation to participate for a month and help us offer a joyful Reformation sound to the Lord!  Remember....you don't have to have a great voice to make great music!  On the other hand, if you have a great voice, all the more reason to help us out!

Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm in Fellowship Hall.  You'll be warmly welcomed!  If you have any questions, feel free to call Dawn Allan, Choir Director, at 612-874-0208.

GROWLERS AND THEOLOGY

We are so proud of our Grade 1-4 class that made cards for our homebound members.  Our 5th and 6th graders are learning about worship by studying about all of the parts of the liturgy this year.  They will remain in worship the first Sunday of each month to participate as acolytes and do an "in worship" lesson plan starting October 1.

Important Sunday School dates for October to note:
October 1:   Blessing of the "stuffed" animals after worship!
5th and 6th graders remain in worship this day.  Pick up your "in worship lesson" at the worship center in the Narthex (back of Sanctuary)

We are collecting new or gently used coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, boots and snow pants.  Donation collection areas will be located in the Narthex (back of Sanctuary).
