Nifty Needlework
The Creative Arts building at Fair Park is transformed each year into a fabulous showcase of local talent. Ribbon winners in more than 1,100 categories, including canning, quilts, photography, arts, and crafts are artfully displayed in their 1,700-square-foot home.

This year's display during the State Fair of Texas featured the handiwork of Elizabeth Schmitt , Lakehill’s sixth, eighth, and ninth grade English teacher, who recently won third place in the Texas State Fair’s Creative Arts Crocheting competition, beating out eight other competitors in her category with her hooded poncho.

Her crocheting talents first surfaced this January, just seven months ago, when she promised herself to improve her fiber arts habits as a New Year’s Resolution. With the help of YouTube, fiber arts classes, private sessions, and Ms. Huitt, soon she was making scarves, hats, and ponchos for her loved ones. As Schmitt explains, “Making things for other people motivates me to put more care into what I create.”

That motivation seems to have paid off. The poncho that placed at the State Fair was made for her daughter.

You can view her winning poncho in case #7 in the Creative Arts Buiding (the one with the butter sculpture in front), and, if you are her student, take a photo of yourself next to her poncho to earn extra credit for her class.

Be sure to take a trip to see it!

Sixth Graders Deliver Meals on Wheels
The sixth grade class has taken on Lakehill's Meals on Wheels route for the 2017-18 school year. Groups of two or three students deliver meals on the first, third, and fifth Wednesday of each month. The group delivered their first meals on October 4 and will continue the project through May.

Already the experience is making an impact. "It made me feel so good to help people and provide what may be their only meal that day," said sixth grader  Taylor Lewis . "Everyone was nice and so happy to see us," added  Aslan Campbell Ellis Langford  agreed. "It really was an inspiring experience. I am so glad our class got involved."

This is Lakehill's sixth year to participate in the Meals on Wheels program. Groups who might be interested in participating with Lakehill's Meals on Wheels route should contact  Ms. Ekstrom  for more information.
Who's New?
Lakehill Welcomes Harold Sprouls
Harold Sprouls joins the Lakehill faculty this year, teaching Lower School Music and Middle School Band and Orchestra.

Sprouls is a native to Flower Mound, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music. While at UNT, he performed with their Wind Symphony and their Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. He can be heard on the UNT Wind Symphony Recordings  Allegories  and Retrospectives under the  Klavier  Wind Project Label. He also studied at the United States Army School of Music at Little Creek Joint Expeditionary Base in Norfolk, Virginia.

Prior to coming to Lakehill, he served as the Head Music Director at Founders Classical Academy of Flower Mound, where he also taught Band, Orchestra, and Elementary Music. Sprouls has been in education for 17 years as a private instructor, ensemble clinician, band and orchestra director, and elementary music teacher, coaching many students to prize-winning performances.

He has won many honors for his musicianship, including the National Flute Association High School Soloist Competition, the Chicago Flute Club International Chamber Music Competition, and the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition. He is currently the principal flutist in the Texas National Guard Band in Austin, Texas and is a sought after soloist and orchestral musician in the Dallas area.

Sprouls and his wife Lydia live in Lake Highlands with their son, Lakehill third grader, Isaac. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys hiking, fishing, and camping. He also loves to cook and smoke meats.

Sprouls is passionate about music education and music literacy. "I have a deep love of music and music education. Music helps us understand the order and beauty in the universe."

He is anxious to build the new band and orchestra program at Lakehill and is most looking forward to their first concert, one step in his goal to help children create music. "The best part of my job is teaching children how to read music, and experiencing the joy that comes from students when their understanding of music is no longer as a listener but as a participant in the creation of the music."

Sprouls feels embraced by his new community. "I have never felt as welcome as I do with the faculty and families at Lakehill."
