Gene Rauth, Town Manager of Jupiter Island, had nothing but positive things to say about how their underground utilities performed during and after Hurricane Irma. "Our town did great," said Mr. Rauth. "We would still be dealing with downed poles and lines if our utilities were still above ground."

Palm Beach Squeaks Out a Budget, Tax Hike by One Vote

The fate of an $80.5 million town budget came down to a single vote. After a tense, at-times contentious public hearing that lasted more than three hours, the Town Council voted 3-2 Wednesday to adopt a spending plan for the year that begins Oct. 1. It's $3.7 million larger than last year's.

The Town Council's call for spending cuts has led Town Manager Tom Bradford to propose a comprehensive review of town operations during the next year. "The budget is a balancing act between the needs of the taxpayers and needs of the town," Bradford said at Tuesday's council meeting. "I fully understand the severity of what we need to do."
Shore Board Supports Plan to Fight Erosion Near Breakers
The town thinks it may have the solution to the chronic sand erosion problems in Midtown from The Breakers south to the municipal beach. Mike Jenkins, an engineer with Applied Technology & Management, presented a six-step process to the Shore Protection Board on Friday that would add groins in places and would improve or extend some existing structures.
