Staten Island PPS brings ArchCare's TimeBank to Staten Island

"We all have something to give and even if we think we don't, the TimeBank helps you see that you have much to give."

Staten Island PPS, recognizing the value of informal support networks and their role in filling in some of the gaps of the formal service system, awarded a multi-year grant earlier this year to expand the ArchCare TimeBank to Staten Island.

The ArchCare TimeBank is a free volunteer program where members "bank" their time helping each other, providing and receiving services, assisting neighborhood organizations (such as food pantries and nursing homes) and participating in member-led group activities.

ArchCare, the health care ministry of the Archdiocese of NY, has been successfully running their time bank in several NYC neighborhoods. It is one of the largest in the world, with over 1,500 members. In just 3 years, they have banked over 50,000 hours of assistance to each other as well as to the over 80 community organizations that are also members of the TimeBank.

Currently, over 80 Staten Island residents, ranging from 8 to 87 years old, have already joined the ArchCare TimeBank and have begun helping each other.

If you work with an organization that could benefit from support from the TimeBank or are interested in becoming a member, you can contact TimeBank Coordinator, Laura Alfano, at [email protected] or 917-716-2905.

Be a Health Literacy Hero
October is Health Literacy Month! Health Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals to promote the importance of understandable health information and a chance for you to tell the world what you're doing too!

The theme for Health Literacy Month is "Be a Health Literacy Hero." It's about taking action and finding ways to improve health communication. Health Literacy Heroes are individuals, teams, or organizations who not only identify health literacy problems but also act to solve them. You can help by recognizing and cheering on those you consider as Health Literacy Heroes.

Do you know a Health Literacy Hero? Please share your story with us! Staten Island PPS will be giving an award to a 'Health Literacy Hero' based on your submissions.

Here's how to nominate someone:

Email  your health literacy hero nomination to [email protected] that includes:
a.  Your health literacy hero's information
b.  Your organization
c.  A story about what makes your Health Literacy Hero a champion of improved health communication

SI PPS Events, Training, and Resources

Keep up with all of our upcoming and ongoing training opportunities!

In case you missed it, you can find all of our upcoming and ongoing trainings here.

SI PPS is launching its Fall
Medical Interpreter Training program
Our Medical Interpreter training has already led to 40+ bilingual employees from 15 partner sites becoming Qualified Medical Interpreters. These interpreters bridge cultural and linguistic gaps where adverse events due to communication would otherwise occur. Sharing a common language in healthcare improves satisfaction, trust, adherence and outcomes.

Graduates of the program speak Spanish, Russian, Albanian, Mandarin and  Hindi. This cycle we are interested  in candidates who speak Polish, Arabic and West African languages.
