Legislative Day proposals considered for legislative agenda
At Legislative Day, section leaders presented 13 legislative proposals, including from the Wills, Trusts & Estates, Business Law, Construction and Public Contracts Law, and Real Estate sections and from the Commission on the Needs of Children. After hearing clarification from the section representatives on their bill proposals, the board, including Rudene Haynes, Alison McKee and LPMD Chair Joe Carpenter, agreed to adopt 11 for the VBA's 2018 legislative agenda.

The Board of Governors also will consider recommendations from the Boyd-Graves Conference, whose invitees meet Oct. 6-7, and from the affiliated Virginia Family Law Coalition before firming up the VBA's 2018 legislative agenda.

Labor relations conference draws nearly 200 to Norfolk
The 2017 Conference on Labor Relations and Employment Law was a huge success. Held in Norfolk at the new Hilton on Main, the conference included a wealth of speakers who gave presentations on employee benefits and effective litigation techniques, as well as discussed topics including the Black Lives Matter movement. Attendees agreed it was truly one for the ages. Section Chair Kevin D. Holden presented Irma B. Dillard (right) with the Biennial Chair's Award for her years fighting to achieve justice for minorities in her community of Richmond.

65 practitioners attend Joint ADR symposium
Th
e Joint Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee presented a daylong CLE program, "A Place at the Table: A Symposium on Attracting 21st Century Clients and Efficiently Solving Their Problems." Law students from the University of Richmond attended to hear speakers such as retired Justice LeRoy F. Millette Jr., who presented the keynote talk on "The Value of Having Good Problem-Solving Skills."

The 19th Annual Corporate Counsel Fall Forum took place Thursday at the Omni Richmond Hotel. It offered in-house counsel and corporate law professionals multiple MCLE Credit Hours, including Ethics presentations and a post-CLE social.

Oct. 5 YLD Town Hall Meetings debate - Lt. Gov. candidates
While seating is limited, the organizers of the debate between the lieutenant governor candidates have a designated number of seats for VBA members and YLD members. Admission is by advance online registration that ends today. The event is Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom at the University of Richmond School of Law. A reception follows the debate.
Democrat Justin Fairfax, a former assistant U.S. attorney, and Republican
Jill Holtzman Vogel, a state senator from Fauquier County, will be on the ballot in November. Bill Fitzgerald, evening anchor at WTVR CBS-Channel 6, will serve as moderator with assistance from Dr. Robert Holsworth, a longtime analyst of state politics.

OCT. 6-7 - The Boyd-Graves Conference (invitation only) meets in Reston to review conferee reports and consider legislative proposals.
OCT. 12 - The
Administrative Law Section's Annual Fall Ethics CLE is a two-hour ethics program, to be held in downtown Richmond.
Register before all seats are taken.
OCT. 14 - The
YLD Fall Meeting in Richmond is open to all VBA members in the Young Lawyers Division for $50; law school students for $20 and non-VBA members for $100. Come get involved, learn and take part in an optional brewery tour (additional fee).
OCT. 17 - After a successful introductory year, the
White Collar Criminal Law Forum returns in Richmond.The half-day CLE forum is presented by the VBA Criminal Law Section and the VBA Law School Council at the University of Richmond.
OCT. 19 - It's lucky 13 for the annual
Virginia Health Care Practitioners' Roundtable. Law students welcome.
Register by Oct. 5 to get a discount. 6.5 MCLE Credit Hours (1.0 Ethics) anticipated.
OCT. 27-28 - Board of Governors Fall Meeting begins at noon.
OCT. 27 - The
Virginia Tax Practitioners' Roundtable convenes in Charlottesville for its 28th annual forum. Commissioner Craig Burns will present an update from the Tax Commissioner's office. 3.5 MCLE Credit Hours (1.0 Ethics) anticipated.
November events include the Administrative Law Conference and the Capital Defense Workshop. Don't forget to save the date for the 128th Annual Meeting, set for Jan. 18-20 in Williamsburg.

Governor proclaims October as Pro Bono Month
Gov. Terry McAuliffe has designated October as Pro Bono Month in Virginia, part of a national pro bono celebration "to showcase the differences that pro bono lawyers make in their communities by substantially enhancing the distribution of and access to justice."
The VBA offers several ways for lawyers to provide pro bono services, including the
Veterans Issues Task Force Pro Bono Volunteer List, the
Mentor Program, Wills for Heroes and the Credit Issues Project, all
activities and projects coordinated through the Young Lawyers Division.

What are your views on lawyer well-being?
VBA President David S. Mercer strongly urges the membership to review an ABA task force report and a resolution by the Conference of Chief Justices about lawyer well-being. Then he requests that you share comments, suggestions or questions via a form provided on the VBA website. Your input will be used to develop the VBA's response on this subject, requested by Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons, who plans to appoint a committee to investigate and support well-being in Virginia.
