urbanagVirginia Urban Agriculture Summit
October 5 & 6
George Mason Campus - Arlington

AFAC is a proud co-sponsor of the Virginia Urban Agriculture Summit, held at George Mason's Arlington campus on October 5-6, 2017.  Agriculture plays an important role in Virginia; farmers are important partners in AFAC's effort to distribute fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables to the families we serve.  With the help of many volunteers, AFAC receives fresh produce donations from regional farmers, farmers markets, and local gardens.

Join AFAC and partners for a two-day summit with community leaders and agricultural experts. Learn about sustainability, food waste, policy, agriculture in the classroom, starting a business, and much more.

For more details about confirmed speakers, workshops, panels, and tours, visit the website https://vafb.swoogo.com/urbanag2017.
cropwalkArlington CROP Walk
October 29

Let's fight against hunger together with a 5K/10K walk around Arlington!

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events that bring people together in a common mission: helping hungry people at home and around the world. AFAC is the local charity beneficiary and will get 25% of the proceeds from this event.

Please, consider joining Team AFAC and walking to raise much needed funds and awareness for hunger here in Arlington and around the globe. The steps we take - and the funds we raise - will make a real impact!

Gleaning
Saturday, September 30

We will go gleaning in Winchester, VA (about 90 minutes from Arlington) for apples from 9-11am. This is a great opportunity for families (we recommend minimum age of 5) to get out to the country and enjoy the fresh air and exercise. If you are interested, please go to the volunteer calendar. If you are a group and wish to take more than 10 spots, please email the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@afac.org.

Gleaners, Gleaners, Pumpkin Eaters!  Join the AFAC glean team at USDA-Beltsville two mornings ( Tuesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 26) to harvest winter squash.  The fall weather will be lovely! Carpooling will be arranged. Contact volunteer4afac@afac.org to sign up.

Outdoor Bagging at Cherrydale UMC
Saturday, October 7

Looking for a family-friendly group activity? Cherrydale United Methodist Church at 3701 Lorcom Lane will be the site for a huge produce bagging activity from 8:30-10:30am in their parking lot. This is a rain or shine activity. Arrive when your schedule allows and leave when you need to (we estimate it will take two hours worth of work, but we cannot promise a specific end time). We recommend this is appropriate for ages 5+ and great for smaller groups. We are not taking RSVPs for this event.

Be an AFAC Ambassador!

We need help at the upcoming Health Education Fair at Arlington Mill Community Center on Saturday, October 14. We need two helpers for two shifts. The event itself is 10am-2pm. This is a fun way to support AFAC and our goal of improved client health. Please go to our online calendar if you can assist us and more details will be sent to you shortly.

golfAFAC Golf Tournament

Last Thursday, AFAC's 3rd Annual Golf Tournament, sponsored by McLean Mortgage Corporation, was a rousing success! A great time was had by all the participants, the weather was wonderful, and over $40,000 was raised to help feed our neighbors in need! Thank you to all the sponsors, golfers, and golf tournament committee for making such an event possible!
Lost and Found

As our renovations get under way, we have decided to part with our overflowing Lost & Found. It's mostly eyeglasses, keys, water bottles and jackets/hoodies/sweatshirts. If you think you've left an item here, please email us at volunteer4afac@afac.org with a brief description. All items here after 9/29 will be donated to another organization.
ThanksThank You

Thank you to Giant Food, ART Transit, and National Express Transit for hosting our annual Stuff the Bus food drives at Giant stores in Virginia Square and Lyon Village. The generosity of our partners and the shoppers at Giant collected 2,999 pounds of food for our neighbors in need.

Many thanks to Society of St Andrews for gleaning and to Marker Miller Farm for donating 2,310 pounds of fresh apples!

Thank you to USDA for donating 564 pounds of potatoes and beans.

Huge thanks to Grace Community Church, who participated in our Sponsor Purchased Food (SPF) program! Between their Sunday services, parishioners bagged 11,000 lbs of produce! Christ Crossman UMC held an SPF during their Falls Church Feeds the World event earlier this month and McLean Mortgage Corporation held an SPF at their office, where employees helped bag 4,000 lbs. If your organization is interested in hosting an SPF at your location, see our SPF page for details.

Thank you to all those who held food drives or donated to Plot Against Hunger!
