WATCH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S STATE OF THE DISTRICT BREAKFAST LIVE
Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips will welcome and address 350 business and community leaders during the annual
Superintendent's State of the District Breakfast on October 13, 2017 at Godinez Fundamental High School. The event is sponsored by the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation. It begins at 7 a.m. and will be live streamed on the SAUSD website

Dr. Phillips will provide a key note address, and will be joined by members of the Board of Education to present awards to the University of California, Irvine, the Assistance League of Santa Ana, and the OC Fair and Event Center for embodying three themes that she has identified during her tenure as critical to success in SAUSD: Classroom, Community and Connectedness.

WANT TO LEARN VALUABLE TOOLS TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED?
Attend the 24th Annual SAUSD Parent Conference, which will focus on "Engaged Families, Successful Students" from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on October 14, 2017 at Saddleback High School, 2802 S. Flower St. This conference is free and open to all SAUSD parents. Free child care and transportation will be provided from SAUSD schools. Check with your School Office Manager for more information, or visit www.sausd.us/parentconference. There will be workshops and a Community Resource Fair.

CERTIFICATED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: SANDRA RUVALCABA-YAGHOUBI
Sandra Ruvalcaba-Yaghoubi, a Teacher on Special Assignment at Davis Elementary School, was recognized by the Board of Education this week as the district's Certificated Employee of the Month for October 2017. "She is very, very passionate. I don't think there is anything she wouldn't do for the school," Principal Robert Anguiano said in a new video about her. CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: DEBORAH BOLLINGER
Deborah Bollinger, a Licensed Vocational Nurse at Edison Elementary School, was recognized by the Board of Education this week as the district's Classified Employee of the Month for October 2017. "Deb Bollinger helps all students with any need that they have," Dr. Gina Zyburt, Principal, said in a new video about her. "It makes a huge difference with the families that we serve." 51 SAUSD SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED BY THE CALIFORNIA PBIS COALITION
Fifty-one SAUSD sites were recently recognized by the
California PBIS Coalition as exemplar schools with Platinum, Gold, and Silver implementation of PBIS at their sites. Thirty schools received Gold; 20 received Silver. Adams Elementary School received the highest honor: Platinum. The award provides districts an opportunity to reflect and celebrate their progress implementing and sustaining schoolwide PBIS. The Board of Education met on
October 10, 2017.
The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Aaron Rodriguez, a student from REACH Academy. After, ambassadors from REACH Academy and Godinez Fundamental, Middle College, and Segerstrom high schools gave reports.
The Board recognized Summer 2017 Jet Propulsion Laboratory scholarship recipients, Certificated Employee of the Month Sandra Ruvalcaba-Yaghoubi, Classified Employee of the Month Deborah Bollinger, and the Santa Ana Police Officers Association for giving scholarships to SAUSD students. In addition, the Board recognized Godinez Fundamental, Middle College, Saddleback, and Segerstrom high schools for being ranked among U.S. News & World Report's 2017 Best High Schools.
The Board adopted resolutions celebrating the selection of Circulos as an XQ Super School, and proclaiming October 8 to 14 as Week of the School Administrator.
Board members also received a presentation on Assessments of Student Performance and Progress by Dr. Sonia Llamas, Assistant Superintendent of Performance and Culture, and information about the Santa Ana Early Literacy Initiative was provided by Dr. Alfonso Jimenez, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning and Ms. Paola Padilla, Project Coordinator of Santa Ana Early Literacy Initiative at Delhi Center.

SANTA ANA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO DON PURPLE SOCKS THIS WEEK TO MARK DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Varsity football players from
Santa Ana Valley High School received lessons in how to spot and combat domestic violence on October 9, 2017, kick starting a week-long effort to highlight and commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Human Options is working with Santa Ana Valley and other high school football teams this month to inspire men and teen boys to fight against domestic violence and teen dating violence. Santa Ana Valley High School football players are joining the campaign this year and will don purple socks at their October 13, 2017 home game against Katella High School to take a stand against domestic violence. THORPE COMMUNITY COLLECTS MONEY FOR MEXICO EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
In one week,
Jim Thorpe Fundamental Elementary School
students, staff, and parents raised $4,196.32 for victims impacted by the recent disastrous earthquake in Mexico. Students emptied their piggy banks, searched for loose change, and encouraged their families and neighbors to give unselfishly. Many of the students did not want to be recognized for their generosity; they just wanted to make a difference.

FOURTH ANNUAL DOWNTOWN SANTA ANA (DTSA) 5K RUN COMING OCTOBER 21
The fourth annual
Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA) 5K Run will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, beginning at Main and Fourth streets. Test your endurance and speed as you pass by Santa Ana historical landmarks including the Orange County Courthouse, Eddie West Stadium and Old City Hall. First, second and third place winners in both the men and women's divisions will receive a custom plaque and all participants will receive a custom medal to commemorate the event. "WINGS OF THE CITY" PUBLIC OUTDOOR EXHIBIT LAUNCHES OCTOBER 27
The City of Santa Ana, in collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico, will soon host nine bronze sculptures by Mexican artist Jorge Marin as part of the
"Wings of the City" public outdoor exhibit in Downtown Santa Ana. In support of cultural ties with Mexico, the exhibit celebrates life and freedom and runs from October 27, 2017 to October 31, 2018. SAUSD students will learn first-hand about the artwork this month. On October 26, 2017, Marin will visit Santa Ana Valley High School. On October 27, 2017, Madison, Heninger, Willard, Madison and Garfield students will attend a "Wings of the City" art workshop. And students from various SAUSD schools will perform during a free sculpture unveiling celebration from 6 to 7 p.m. October 27, 2017 at Plaza Calle Cuatro. For more information, click
