Scripture Lesson: John 2:1-12
Sermon :
"Jesus Condensed" - Part One
This Sunday
This Sunday we'll explore these words spoken by the mother of Jesus. It appears as though Jesus is not ready, but his mom sees and expects something more. Maybe God does too. Mary knows the whole story. She recognizes the power. But this act is so much more than a mom and insecure or unprepared son. This is the part of the story that becomes defining as does what follows. It's so much more complex than we first imagine; we find ourselves immersed in the emotions; of embarrassment, of signs, of wonders, of abundance, of quality, of beginnings and ends, of normal to superb. It's a sign, and what is a sign? Look on the freeway between the Auburn cutoff of I-5 and Fife. Signs line the road. A sign is there to tell you something specific; a special, a sale, a product, something you can't miss. Yup, this sign is similar. This is the thumbnail overview of why this Son is here. It's a sign that defines something special, something offered, something you better not miss. Again, it is also the thumbnail sketch of what our role is in the story; the role we can and must play, and notice that it begins on the third day. To prepare please read John 2:1-12.

EMBaRC Meetings
Enquiring Minds Becomeing a Reconciling Congregation
- If you are interesting in being on the EMBaRC team, please come to a meeting downstairs following first service today. Look for Joe Lee to direct you to the proper classroom. The purpose of the EMBaRC team is to design a process for decision making around discerning whether to become a reconciling congregation. Contact is Joe Lee.
- If you would like more information about EMBaRC and what it means to be a reconciling congregation, please come to the EMBaRC Information meeting tomorrow night on Monday, October 16 at 7:30pm and talk with Pastor Laura and Pastor Brad.

Church Work Party
Saturday, October 28
Please
join us for a church work party on Saturday October 28 from 9:00am-12:00pm. We will work outside raking, weeding, pruning, etc. Bring your gloves and gardening tools. Families and kids are welcome. Aldersgate has a large, beautiful property which takes many volunteers to maintain. Please come when you can Saturday morning and lend a hand. CPR/AED Class
Saturday, November 4
A CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) class will be held here at the church on Saturday
November 4
from 9:00am to 11:30am. The class will teach current CPR procedures and use of our AED. A certification will be awarded to those who attend and demonstrate correct procedures. Note; certifications from the previous class expire this November. Attendance will provide life saving knowledge in the event of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack. Church staff, nursery workers, and ushers are strongly urged to attend. Other folks may also attend if there is room in the class. if you are interested in attending, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office.

Women's Study Group - Time Change
Starting Monday, October 16, the Women's Study Group will start meeting at 2:00pm on Monday afternoons. All women are welcome to attend.
Together we spend time sharing, praying and discussing the book we are reading. Currently we
are reading the book "Living as a Covenant Community" by Evy McDonald. It is a UMW recommended study.

All Saints Day
Sunday, November 5
On Sunday,
November 5
at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 6, 2016) to fill out the Sunday attendance form with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus.

Dreher Memorial Service
Saturday, November 18
Sadly we announce the death of Lane Dreher. Lane and his wife Lynda have been members at Aldersgate since January 2005. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 1:30pm. Green Team Update
The Green Team at Aldersgate has been hard at work and has made progress toward increasing our ability to compost organic waste and decrease our waste stream to landfills. You will notice some new posters soon helping with sorting waste into various receptacles around the building. Take a look! Also whenever possible, think about using reusable dishes instead of disposable. Clear plastic plates and cups have to be landfilled but are easily replaced by reusable plates and cups from the kitchen. The new dishwasher works wonders, so let's use it instead of the landfill.

Worship Brainstorming Party/Potluck
Have you ever wondered how the planning process for our worship services works? Have you ever wished you could let someone know what works for you in worship? Do you have great suggestions for hymns, songs, prayers, visuals for use in worship, or anything else related to
Sunday
morning (either service)? If so, this party is for you! On

we will preview the themes for worship in January and brainstorm some great ideas for the Epiphany Season. The hope is to gather so many ideas that we can't use them all
in one year

Youth Assistant Pledge Drive Continues
Even though the deadline has passed, we are still gladly accepting pledges and donations for the Youth Assistant position. The Youth Program has grown so much that Jen Hoerber needs a Youth Assistant to help her plan and implement the youth program. Your help is needed to raise $15,000 to support the annual salary of a Youth Assistant. P

Membership Rolls
It is time to update the church membership rolls. Every year Betty Fredeen, our Membership Secretary, reviews the church membership and mails out letters to members who, according to our records, have not attended Aldersgate or contributed in the last two years. The purpose of the letter is not to push people away but to let them know we are interested in them, to see if they want to remain members, and to keep our membership records accurate. We need your help. The members listed below did not respond to our letter or the letter was returned by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable. They will be removed from church membership in the near future if we do not hear from them. If you know them, please encourage them to reply to the letter or contact the church office. If you have any information about them, (current contact information, did they moved away, are they attending another church, etc.), please notify Betty Fredeen (425-746-5113) or the church office.
These people were mailed two letters over the last two years. They will be removed from membership at the November 2017 Charge Conference unless we hear from them.

Rummage Sale
Friday & Saturday, October 13 & 14
Satisfy your curiosity and come to the church Rummage Sale Friday and Saturday. You will leave with a treasure! What a deal! Also TODAY, Thursday, is your last day to drop off items for the Rummage Sale. We still need volunteers to help with pricing items TODAY in the morning, afternoon, and evening as well as Saturday cashiers (especially in the morning 8:30am-12:30pm) and Satirdau helpers (all day). Fall Festival is
October 27th
This fun event has been highly popular with 150+ people in attendance from the church, preschool and community in years past. We will have a hot dog / chili dinner, carnival games and of course our costume parade for all the kids!
If you are can help staff a carnival booth, help in the kitchen, decorate, clean up the night of the event, or be part of the cooking team cooking and preparing food prior to the event, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Jen Hoerber.

Club 345 (3rd~4th~5th Grade)

Kids in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades meet once a month on Sunday evening for food and a fun activity.

Interfaith Build
October 12, 13, 19, 20
It's fall and time for the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build. This is your chance to do something about housing the homeless. Habitat is building homes on the Sammamish Plateau and has set aside a block of time for the Interfaith Community. The dates are October 12,13 ,19, and 20. Habitat is hoping for up to 15 volunteers each Thursday and Friday. If you are interested please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Rich Detering for details.
This is also the time to help Habitat financially. The houses are sold at cost the those in need. Our contributions allow Habitat to find new land and to start new homes. Mark your contributions for Habitat and place them in the offering plate.

Crop Walk Update
Aldersgate participated in the Redmond-Bellevue Interfaith Crop Walk this past Sunday. Twenty-six people from Aldersgate joined members from other local churches, mosques, and synagogues to raise awareness and funds to fight against hunger. There were approximate 350 walkers in total and around $5000 raised.
Thank you for the support of both your prayers and your money. Through personal donations and sponsorships, with additional funds from both the Outreach Ministry Team resources and the Pastor's Discretionary Fund, Aldersgate's donation to the Crop Walk will be $828.05. Twenty-Five percent of funds raised will benefit the local work of the Emergency Feeding Program, Muslim Association of Puget Sound-Muslim Community Resource Center, and Hopelink, while 75% of funds will bring sustainable food sources to global communities through the work of Church World Services, Islamic Relief and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger.

Meaningful Movies on the Eastside

The October film is "Demon at the Door: Our Heroin Crisis." Join us as we view the film and have conversation about this very important problem in our communities. For eight months, KOMO News investigated the heroin crisis in Seattle. KOMO News Anchor Eric Johnson calls it shocking, devastating and unflinchingly real. "For the better part of a year we've been working on this program. We've been in alleyways and homes and police cars and assorted incarnations of hell on earth. We've peered into the darkness of heroin addiction, looking for answers, truth, and yes, humanity," Eric Johnson says. "It will hurt to watch this. But I believe it is very important. Watch with your children. You owe it to them. Because looking the other way is no longer an option."
The goal of these screenings is to bring the community together to view a film and enjoy a moderated conversation following the film that invites and welcomes all opinions.
Come and join in the dialog! Free and open to the public! There is a suggested donation of $5/person, but no one will be turned away! RSVP's are helpful to plan food, but come anyway if you don't RSVP.

The Sophia Way Companion Training

In this workshop, you will gain the skills to make a positive impact in the life of a person experiencing homelessness, mental illness, chemical dependency, or other difficulties by serving as a Companion. You will learn how to compassionately and effectively walk side by side with someone in need on their journey towards a better life. Join us on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00am - noon at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3030 Bellevue, WY NE, Bellevue. This workshop is required for women who wish to serve as Companions through The Sophia Way program. A donation of $25 is requested for registration.

where other Methodists in the area can come and take a tour of the new projects they have started up and even pitch in to help on a variety of projects related to their parking lot ministry for homeless families. As we notice the need in our neighborhood increasing due to increased housing costs and decreased options for low income families, this is a way to educate ourselves about how others in the United Methodist connection have found to respond.
