President's Message

Happy New Year everyone!

Here it is, 2017 and the beginning of another year. We at SHOH are looking forward to a wonderful year and hope that each of you also have the best year ever.

For those of you that might be thinking of something to do this New Year, here is a suggestion, volunteer for a Non-Profit Organization. Find an organization you can become passionate about, like SHOH, or just one that needs volunteers. It really doesn't matter, because the reward you get from volunteering makes you feel needed, appreciated and valued within the organization. Also by getting involved in a non-profit organization once a month you can make a huge difference in your community, expand your social circle, and give you great satisfaction in knowing you are doing something positive to help someone or something that doesn't have it as good as you.

Spend a little time researching non-profits, make some phone calls and see what they need from volunteers and think about the special skills you may have to offer them. Don't just throw yourself into volunteering "just because", find that organization you would enjoy volunteering that will make good use of you and your time.

Now for rest of you that have your resolutions to fulfill, here is one more to consider, how about making a donation to Soroptimist House of Hope. As most of you know, our organization helping women with sobriety takes a lot, not only time, but money, and any donation you make, big or small, helps in that endeavor. Also another way to make a donation is to save the date of May 6, for our Annual Day of Hope luncheon, this year at Miracle Springs Spa Resort in Desert Hot Springs.

The SHOH Board of Directors and staff thank you all for your support.

Respectfully,
George Fisher

Executive Director Message

Thank goodness 2016 is behind us! December saw many sorrows and many joys and I for one am so thankful to be a woman in recovery with tools to deal with life one day at a time. One of the great joys is our new bookkeeper Mark Guidry. We welcome him with open arms and he has already proven himself to be a godsend and a huge asset to SHOH! While the holidays were lovely with many wonderful celebrations, we are looking forward to a brand new year in 2017 and we are hopeful that we will be awarded with a new Drug Medi-Cal Contract with Riverside County (RUHS-BH-SAPT) coming in February. This has been a project in the works for the last 3 years and we are so proud to be in partnership with Riverside County. Lupe and I continue to serve on CCAPP Boards which have been so beneficial in keeping us educated in the ever changing landscape of substance use disorder treatment. The political landscape is also an area that could be changing drastically in the coming months so CCAPP is helping to keep us informed of what is coming down the pike for our profession.

We were all saddened at the loss of County Supervisor John Benoit and extend our deepest condolences to his family and staff. John was very supportive of our labor of love and we will all miss him in so many ways.

While we are optimistic about 2017, at this writing, I must report that we had to put one of our beautiful therapy kitties to sleep on 1-10-17. Page (named after our co-founder's husband Bill Page) was born on 5-30-06 and served as an awesome therapy cat from her birth to her death. A beautiful calico with amazing halloween markings, she is forever in our hearts and most certainly welcomed at the rainbow bridge by all the SHOH kitties before her.

I wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and ask for continued prayer and support as we look forward to a brighter future.

"A DAY OF HOPE"
Saturday, May 6, 2017

Mark your calendars for House of Hope's fourth annual "A Day of Hope" event on Saturday, May 6 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.  We'll be hosting lunch at the beautiful Miracle Springs Resort & Spa in Desert Hot Springs, and the afternoon will include a live auction and raffle with a variety of "must-have" items and services.  The event's MC will be Patrick Evans, Chief Meterologist at CBS Local 2 (and master auctioneer!), and all proceeds will help disadvantaged women overcome substance use disorders and live sober, productive and happy lives.  Tickets are $40 per person and will be available in February.   Watch your email for your invitation and ticket ordering details.  We hope to see you there!
GRANTS UPDATE

House of Hope has successfully launched our 2016-2017 fiscal year with the help of several corporate and foundation grants totaling $32,200. The Berger Foundation, Employees Community Fund of Boeing California, Champions Volunteer Foundation, and Wells Fargo awarded grants in support of our residential treatment program services.  Desert Healthcare District provided funds to purchase an emergency generator and hot water heater for our Desert Hot Springs recovery center, and the Laura May Stewart Foundation awarded a grant for the installation of new exterior vinyl fencing at our Banning transitional living home.  We extend our sincere appreciation to all of our corporate and foundation supporters, as well as the generosity of our local Soroptimist clubs and individual donors.  Thank you for your support of our efforts!

Good News and . . . . .

SHOH received a grant to purchase a generator for electrical emergencies. It will allow business as usual in the event of a power outage.

We now have the generator and the next hurdle is to have it installed. We are in the process of finding the funds and also finding the right certified people to do the job.

Our goal is to be able to have it in operation before summer which we all know is not far away.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions please call.

Happy New Year
