CLTNet Workshop at Penn State

CALPER held its 3rd annual workshop for teachers of Chinese in June. The workshop is part of the activities of the CLTNetwork. This year, we invited Professor Jie Zhang to lead us through presentations and discussions on Chinese Program and Curriculum Design. Participants in the two-day event included educators from Slippery Rock University, Kutztown University, the State College Area School District, the University of Alabama, Penn State, and Southern Lehigh School District. Currently, we are working on our 2018 workshop series, which we will announce soon.
STARTALK at U Penn

The Chinese Language Program and the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania conducted a two-week professional development program for Chinese in-service teachers in the summer. The title of the Penn Chinese Teacher Advancement Program was "One Belt, One Road." The two-week program was held for in-service teachers interested in expanding global content in their Chinese language curricula, incorporating China's involvement in Eurasia, and training with multimedia tools to access and use online realia from China in classrooms.
Liberal Arts Fall Festival at Cal U

The 2017 Liberal Arts Fall Festival of California University of Pennsylvania, which was held October 5, included a Chinese Writing and Culture workshop. This year's festival had the theme "Art and Culture Around the World."

What's New on the Bookshelf?

Routledge published a new book on learning vocabulary for beginning and intermediate students. The author is Dr. Wen-Hua Teng (University of Texas at Austin).

Key features of "Essential Chinese Vocabulary" are:
  • In-depth explanations of commonly used words and phrases contextualized with a range of authentic examples providing learners with a comprehensive understanding of the vocabulary-use and allowing them to express themselves accurately and appropriately.
  • Bridges the gap between grammar and vocabulary by presenting frequently neglected rules that govern the use of words and phrases.
  • Clear and systematic comparisons between the uses of ostensibly similar words, highlighting the nuances.
  • Examples in simplified Chinese characters, pinyin and English
  • Identifies common mistakes made by learners and ways to avoid them
  • Extensive cross-references.
You can find out more information about the book by going to the Routledge site.
The 2017 issue of Studies in Chinese Learning and Teaching (supported by Carnegie Mellon University) is available. The journal publishes pedagogical reports and research papers in the field of Chinese learning and teaching and appears once a year. Take a look at the articles and reports in the 2017 issue.
