World Vets in Nicaragua: Approaching a Decade of Direct Veterinary Service
Small animal veterinary field project: San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua 2017
World Vets program service in Nicaragua has been multifaceted and incorporates direct veterinary service for both small animals and equines, as well as surgical training and instruction.
Since 2008, we have been operating small animal field projects that provide much needed veterinary care in many communities around the country. As part of our small animal efforts, we provide free year round sterilization services as well as preventative care and other needed surgical procedures deemed necessary on a case by case basis. Our most recent campaigns also had us vaccinate dogs for rabies in celebration of
World Rabies Day.
Our equine welfare project has also been in existence for just as long and provides free veterinary services to the local horse population that reside within the department of Granada. Our equine efforts target both carriage and cart horses as well as those owned by low income households. Take a look at our equine project below;

Another aspect of our work in Nicaragua involves free surgical training for Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students. Such instruction is provided at our
Latin America Veterinary Training Center, established in 2011 as a teaching facility. Another program based out of this center is our
International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program, which is designed to give international English speaking students the opportunity to experience veterinary medicine in a foreign country.
All such
programs have contributed greatly to the overall animal health in Nicaragua, and have also helped to promote the development of compassionate and caring veterinary professionals.
What's more, our Nicaraguan staff recently provided disaster relief for animals living in areas badly affected by tropical storm Nate.

World Vets has supported the skills training and development of veterinary practitioners in Paraguay since 2014.
We recently sent our lead veterinary instructor from World Vets Latin American Training Centerto provide continuing education to our local veterinary partners in Asuncion. It was a full week of high quality instruction in surgical techniques and safe anesthesia!
Support Veterinarians Abroad with Equipment Donations
Aside from training and mentorship, another way that World Vets supports the Latin American veterinary community is by facilitating donations of veterinary equipment. We are happy to announce that so far this year we have been able to donate brand new dental machines to our local partners' veterinary clinics in Ecuador and Peru.
Equipment items that are currently on our wishlist include a d
igital x-ray, portable ultrasound (no older than 2005), otoscopes, spay hooks, portable pulse oximeters and portable monitors. We will accept both new and used equipment, though any used items would need to be in good working condition. Please write to donations@worldvets.org if you have equipment you'd like to donate!
