Public Comments

Diane Carroll, resident, stated that any decision the Board may make regarding additional space at Willard School should also take into consideration the school's future facility needs, such as planning for a potential full-day kindergarten program. Ms. Carroll requested that Board members take into account offering full-day kindergarten when deciding on possible facility changes at Willard.

Pat Meyer, former District 90 Board President, stated his renewed appreciation for the education his daughter received at Roosevelt Middle School. After relocating to Colorado last year, Mr. Meyer explained how he was able to compare the education his daughter received at Roosevelt with the middle school in their new location. She is now a high school freshman and is doing well. Mr. Meyer thanked the Board members for their service and commitment to students.

D90/YMCA Partnership: Power Scholars Academy - Ed Condon, Superintendent, Phillip Jimenez, Director, West Cook YMCA
Dr. Condon informed Board members about the Power Scholars Academy (PSA), which is the District's collaboration with the West Cook YMCA and Forest Park School District 91 to provide a summer learning experience got qualifying learners. Dr. Condon introduced West Cook YMCA Director Phillip Jimenez who provided details about the initiative and showed a brief video about the program. The PSA is an evidence-based initiative that is designed to improve students' academic success and build their self-confidence.

Up to 40 District 90 students will be invited to participate in the program, which will start in June 2018 and lasts for five weeks. Between both school districts, there will be a total of 120 students participating. Sessions will include math and literacy instruction, community building, recreation, and enrichment activities.  The academic components of the PSA will conform to the Illinois Learning Standards. Breakfast, lunch, and transportation will also be provided. The program will be held daily at the Field Stevenson Elementary School in Forest Park.

Dr. Condon further explained that the PSA collaboration represents an exploration of working with external partners and helps to meet the District's priorities of advancing educational equity, eliminating the achievement gap, and fostering community partnerships. The program is largely supported by a grant from the YMCA of the USA, which will reduce the District's costs to about $600 per student. Costs for meals and transportation will be shared by District 90 and District 91. A robust discussion about the program was held among the Board members after the presentation. Additional information about the Power Scholars Academy can be viewed in the Board Packet.
Facilities Committee - Judy Deogracias, Chair

Willard Proposed Classroom Addition

Anthony Cozzi, Director of Finance and Facilities, provided an overview about the updated conceptual scheme for possible classroom additions at Willard School. This update follows the conceptual schemes and discussion presented at the September Board of Education meeting. He outlined the revisions to the layout of the proposed classrooms and discussed approaches to providing adequate space for staff members who provide student services such as occupational therapy or counseling. Mr Cozzi stated that the intention is not to facilitate the addition of new programs, but to find acceptable facility resources to serve current student needs. He also provided an overview of the costs for the classroom additions, which is estimated to be about $1.75 million.
Dr. Condon complimented Anthony Cozzi, Willard Principal Diane Wood, and the Willard staff for their flexibility and creative suggestions on approaches to using the potential new space at Willard, and requested that the items be added to the agenda of the October Board of Education Meeting for consideration. Board members followed Mr. Cozzi's presentation with a robust discussion about the proposed classroom additions at Willard.

Pursuant to 5ILCS120/2(c) for 10) The placement of individual students in special education programs and other matters relating to individual students, Board members entered into a closed session.
