Not A Season, But A Way of Living
This Sunday marks the formal beginning of Trinity's annual "stewardship season", when we talk about our parish's annual giving campaign.  I must admit: I don't like framing our stewardship as "seasonal," because in truth, our stewardship of Trinity represents our ongoing, year-round commitment to take care of our community and spiritual home. Our stewardship supports our shared ministries through which we seek to encounter the holy together and stand as a visible witness of God's love for the world.

Over the past few months, members of Trinity's Stewardship Committee have engaged members of our community to hear why it is you feel called to support Trinity, especially during this extraordinary time in our history. We heard about your hunger to know and to be known, to listen to each other's stories, to find chances to wrestle with and name what you believe. We heard you give thanks for the opportunities we share to grow in friendship across generations. We heard your yearning to secure our legacy of faith at Trinity and to promote justice in our city and in the world.

In response to what we heard from you, we have worked together to shape a stewardship campaign that fits who we are and challenges us to grow in faith: one that frames our dreams and goals, and offers us a way to reflect on our shared ministry within our church and out in the world.

At Trinity, we connect with God and one another; we equip ourselves as disciples; and we ask God to send us out to do the work God gives us to do. At Trinity, we invite everyone to receive and to be the Body of Christ.

These ministries happen because of your stewardship of Trinity Church. Indeed, your stewardship and Trinity's ministries are difficult to separate. Both reflect the truth of who I believe we are at Trinity: practical, unsentimental, fiercely honest, willing "to risk something big for something good." And both reflect deep commitments: our commitments to one another, to Trinity, and to our mission of bringing the Good News of God's unfailing love and mercy to people and places that are in need of both.

Yours are the gifts that make our ministries possible. Yours are the gifts that afford us the chance to gather, day-by-day and week-by-week, marking our joys and mourning our losses, as we continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. Yours are the gifts that allow us to worship in the beauty of holiness. Yours are the gifts that create space for kinship across generation and class and ethnicity, and anything else that would divide us. Yours are the gifts that fan the flames of our ministries that promote justice and mercy.

This extraordinary year invites us to do extraordinary things together. I am excited to embark on this journey with you, and I look forward to the fruits that our efforts will bear.

See you Sunday,
