September is the most beautiful month on Cape Cod and a time when so many who live and work here year round are able to reconnect with their community (and sometimes their spouses and children) as the pace of everyday life slows down a bit. It is a relief to be able to grocery shop after work, grab a bite to eat without standing in a line, and getting around is certainly a lot less stressful.
For those of us working at the CDP, autumn is the start of our busy time and we have a lot to tell you about in this issue of our monthly E-news. Our small business clients are able to reengage with us, start thinking about strategies for growth and attend our workshops. We have significantly retooled our workshop offerings in an effort to respond to needs identified in our survey of small business clients last spring. You can learn more by clicking

Cape Cod Commission Study Is Proof We Need the Cape Housing Institute

Lack of Housing Options as Primary Reason for Cost-Burdened Households...
Earlier this month the Cape Cod Commission released its long awaited report and analysis of the housing market on Cape Cod.
The Community Development Partnership contributed to the development of the report. We convened a focus group last spring to hear from renters and both Board and staff attended seve
ral regional meetings to provide feedback on preliminary findings of the study.
What the study determined was that if we do not adjust the housing supply to meet life stage preferences, more than half of year-round households could experience housing cost burdens by 2025.

he lack of affordable housing on Cape Cod is a crisis that places considerable strain on year round residents and impedes economic development in the region due to the lack of housing for the workforce.
Affordable year-round rentals are in short supply, rental stock is limited due to the premium placed on high-priced summer vacation rentals, and lower-wage workers cannot afford market rate rents for year-round housing.
Nationally, 31% of housing units are occupied by renters, while on Cape Cod only 13% of housing units are available for year-round renters. Equally concerning is that between 2010 and 2015, the Cape lost 3,800 year-round housing units while gaining 5,000 seasonal units. To meet current needs, the Cape Cod Commission estimates that the Lower Cape needs 1,100 new units of housing affordable to working families.
The CDP and HAC (Housing Assistance Corporation) has developed the Cape Housing Institute, a series of workshops designed to inform and empower local municipal employees, select boards and committee members. The CDP will work to assist the towns of the Lower and Outer Cape in responding to this crisis by supporting the creation of affordable housing throughout the region.

Welcome to the Team!
CDP Welcomes new Chief Development and Communications Officer
On July 31st Britt Beedenbender joined the Community Development Partnership team. As she is responsible for building relationships between the CDP, its supporters, and its many constituent groups it is likely you will hear from her at some point!
A 26 year veteran of non-profits, Britt started out in advertising. The for-profit world didn't inspire her so she returned to graduate school for Art History. Four years later she began a
14 year career working in museums.
Britt moved to the Cape in 1994 and soon after became the Director of the Centerville Historical Museum. While there she worked as a free-lance writer for regional arts publications and the Barnstable Patriot.
During a period of transition she went into real estate and consulted for a variety of non-profits, including Outer Cape Health Services and the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. In 2007 she joined the International Fund for Animal Welfare where she fostered one on one relationships with constituents, ultimately becoming Associate Director of Major Gifts.
She remains a volunteer with IFAW's Marine Mammal Stranding Response program. Actively engaged in local politics, she is also a member of the League of Women Voters. Britt lives in Centerville with her significant other, her daughter, two rescue dogs and a cat.

Cape Institutions Show Their Support for Cape Housing Institute
In just two weeks our Cape Housing Institute is scheduled to begin. This effort, a partnership with Housing Assistance Corporation, is intended t
o help Cape Cod towns solve the affordable housing crisis by giving folks involved in the planning and decision making process the tools to address the economic crisis caused by a lack of affordable housing.
We are thrilled and grateful to have received support from some wonderful Cape organizations and institutions. Cape Cod Foundation, Cape Cod Five, the United Way and Cape Cod Young Professionals all generously stepped forward to show their support and recognition of this important initiative. Thank you!
The Cape Housing Institute, a series of informative, skill-building workshops that the CDP will run on the Lower and Outer Cape, is part of a three-pronged strategy that includes advocacy training and a public awareness campaign.
Without your support, and the support of organizations like Cape Cod Five, Cape Cod Foundation, Cape Cod Young Professionals and the United Way, we could not further our mission to create opportunities for people to live, thrive and work on Cape Cod.

First Time Homebuyer Program
The Community Development Partnership offers a Homebuyer Education course for first time buyers. These courses provide information on budgeting, looking for, selecting, and purchasing a home, and local resources that may be available to buyers.
The workshop consists of 3 classes and attendance to all three is mandatory in order to receive a Certificate of Completion and be eligible for special mortgage products.
Pre-Registration is required. Class dates are October 11th, October 16th and October 18th and run from 6:00 - 9:00pm.

Marketing your business: traditional PR for the 21st Century
This is a reminder that our marketing workshop series for small businesses kicks off on October 3. It is the first in a series of three workshops that will help you improve your marketing and advertising skills.
The workshops run from 5:30 to 7:00pm in the CDP conference room in Eastham:

Housing Rehabilitation Program
Attention homeowners and landlords! Receive up to $40,000 for critical repairs to your home. Repairs include, but are not limited to roofing, heat, windows, siding, septic, lead paint abatement and energy efficiency upgrades. Get expert assistance on planning the work and work with quality licensed and insured contractors. Funding is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. This program is available to income eligible residents of Dennis, Eastham, Harwich, Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet.
