The Miller's example of Dakota Baptist values
This past weekend I had the honor of attending Berna Miller's Memorial Service.  In the midst of remembering and celebrating her life, I noted several things about who we are as Dakota Baptists.  I observed that we value the service of others.  We celebrated Berna's and John's service to the Dakotas.  We celebrated the friendship we had with Berna and thanked God for her selfless service.

I observed how we love each other.  I saw Dakota Baptists hugging each other, embracing John and shedding tears of sadness and yet joy with each other.  I also noticed how John Miller moved around the room greeting everyone, loving on them, encouraging them in the way John is known for.  I thought as I saw and experienced his embrace myself that here is a man who loves much.  I wanted to say, "Wait a minute, John!  We are here to encourage you, to give you the hugs."  However, I quickly realized, "No, this is the John Miller we all know!"  A man who loves much and is much loved!

Our prayers continue with the Miller family, especially with Pastor Allen Thomason, Becky and the boys and the rest of the Miller children.  God's comfort is great and his presence is everlasting.

Reminder: October is Pastor Appreciation Month

Pastor Appreciation Day began out of 1st Timothy 5:17 where it states, "Let the Elders who rule well be counted of double honor, especially those who labor in the Word and Doctrine". NKJV.   This idea became Clergy Appreciation Month in 1992. *

Here are 5 things that you can do to show your Pastor how much you appreciate him
  1. Give him a call and let him know that you appreciate him and are praying for him. (not just on Sunday Morning)
  2. Send him a THANK YOU card from your family to his. (make it personal)
  3. Have your family take him and his family out for a meal. (restaurant of HIS choice)
  4. Give your Pastor a gift card. (someplace that he would love to shop, but does not normally shop)
  5. Help him along with other church members to provide a weekend away. (a place for him and his family that they would enjoy)

2017 Dakota Baptist Gathering Summary
We had a great Baptist Gathering in Pierre, South Dakota at the Ramkota Inn.  While we had 77 registered messengers, we had 100 to 110 in attendance during the sessions.  We heard some great preaching from Mark Phillips, IMB missionary to Niger, and a two-hour presentation from John Mark Clifton concerning Revitalization and Replanting Churches.  Dr. Frank Page brought an encouraging message on Thursday night dn hosted our pastor and church leaders for breakfast the next morning.

We adopted our 2018 budget which raised our Cooperative Program giving 26%.  We adopted our year calendar for 2018 and set our next Baptist Gathering meeting for Sioux Falls in 2018.  We adopted two resolutions: one in memory of Berna Miller and one in appreciation of June Highlan who is retiring from keeping our books for the convention.  The DBC adopted revisions to the Constitution and Bylaws of the convention and recognized new pastors who have come to the Dakotas since our last Baptist Gathering.

Our Executive Director shared an outline for where the DBC is planning to go for the next 2-3 years.  The outline is shared below.

Steve Ford, Jonathan Land, Ernie Nelson and Karen Holmes were re-elected president, vice president, recording secretary and assistant recording secretary respectively.  The nominating committee recommended that Nick Geray and Ann-Maire Caldwell be re-elected for new terms to the Executive Board and that Scott Ristau, Dude Garrett and Jonathan Land be elected to the Board as well.

Our next Baptist Gathering will be in Sioux Falls, South Dakota October 11-12, 2018.
