The Voice of the BC Tourism Industry

CEO's Message

It took several weeks to line up a meeting with new Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Hon. Lisa Beare. But rest-assured, we were not being ignored, nor were we anxious about the delay. In fact, Minister Beare elected to meet with wildfire affected tourism operators during a time of crisis (a move we applaud) as a first priority before connecting with industry leaders.

When we recently had a chance to meet face-to-face, I was impressed by her enthusiasm for British Columbia's visitor economy, her knowledge of several files, and her commitment to work with TIABC and other key stakeholders throughout the province to resolve some of the challenges that our industry faces no matter how large or small.

Aside from discussing the possibility of financial assistance for operators whose entire season was wiped out by the wildfire situation, we also talked about government's plan and accompanying regulations for ridesharing, the need to secure formula funding for Destination BC, solutions to labour challenges, the opportunity to adopt a new adventure tourism strategy, provincial support to assist municipalities in addressing housing shortages caused by short-term rentals, and a host of other topics.

Minister Beare also confirmed her attendance at TIABC's upcoming Summit where she will briefly address delegates during lunch, then stay for a casual meet and greet. It will be her first opportunity to connect with a cross section of industry representatives from around the province. If you haven't yet made plans to attend the Summit for the Minister's lunch, as well as the other sessions, ensure that you register soon.

On another note, TIABC's Policy Development Committee is working on a survey to identify the major issues impacting member businesses that will help us focus our policy priorities in the coming year.  Look for the survey shortly after the Summit.

As always, your comments and questions are welcome.  We look forward to seeing at the TIABC AGM and Summit in a couple of weeks.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a non-profit immigrant serving agency since 1973. Recently, the Province of BC has supported S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to develop a Fact Sheet for the Tourism/Hospitality sector employers.

1. Language Skills
2. Lack of Canadian Work Experience
3. Industry Awareness

And outlines what employers can do, including inclusive hiring processes, offering language support, providing diversity training, having a mentor program and providing paid internships or work placements.
