4-H Updates
September 2017 
New 4-H Club! Club focus will be healthy living. Youth and their guardians are encouraged to come out and be a part of this first club meeting. This club is open to any Burke County youth interested in 4-H, ages 5-18. You do not have to be a current 4-H member, however current members are invited to be apart of multiple clubs. Club meeting will begin at 6:00pm. We will have light refreshments and the program activity will be.... VIDEO GAMES for the family!!!! Please call the office you have any questions. 4-H Project Record Book Workshop 5:30-7:30pm. Come by to see what it takes to complete an award winning 4-H Project Record Book. Feel free to bring your project information to work on while there, or just stop by for information and to ask questions. All active Burke County 4-H'ers are encouraged to complete a record book each year showcasing their project work areas. These books are turned in at the end of the calendar year for competition and awareness.

Fall Forage Tips 
August and September are good timed to accomplish fall pasture maintenance. With fall arriving, now is the time to apply Lime and fertilizer to pastures and hayfields planted to cool season grasses. Cool season grasses make their peak growth in the cooler weather of spring and fall, and any fertilizer applied in spring is long gone. Additional nitrogen now will increase growth for fall grazing.
If you have fields planted to summer annuals like Sudex or Pearl Millet, they can be over seeded with winter annuals as well to provide winter grazing. For cattle, and small ruminants, you can utilize oats, wheat, rye or ryegrass. Rye is the highest yielding choice.
For horses, the best choices are oats and ryegrass. Oats will produce heavy spring yields and horses love them. Ryegrass is a good choice for both spring and fall grazing, as it will produce more fall forage and a heavier spring yield than any other winter annual suitable for horses. If managed properly, it will provide grazing throughout the winter, cutting down on the grain requirement.
The most expensive forage for livestock is hay. By investing in fertilizer and seed now, you can reduce hay needs for this winter.

Nursery Crop Field Day

Field day will be held at Hard & Flossie Clark Community Park on Adako Road in Colletsville, NC. Pesticide renewal credits will be offered for categories L,N,O,D, X. NC Landscape Contractor credits will also be offered. Topics include: insect and disease management, drone use for pest and nutrient management, and preventing cicada damage.
Registration is $10 if paid by September 1, 2017, $20 if paid after September 1.

Spittle Bugs
Calls are coming in to the office this time of year regarding white foamy masses that area gardeners are observing on weeds, shrubs and particularly, muscadine vines. It looks much worse than it is, however, and the culprit is the spittlebug or frog hopper. These insects can be seen throughout the late summer as they produce a foamy substance that looks just like spit.
Spittle bugs lay their eggs on plant stems where they hatch in to nymphs. These nymphs or immature spittlebugs produce the foam that we see. This foam protects the young nymphs by insulating them from heat or cold and also from other insect predators while they develop into adults. They can also be found in the spring on many plants but in the late summer they seem to prefer muscadines.
As adults they resemble a small grass hopper with orange stripes. They can hop from plant to plant. While they are  piercing, sucking insects, little or no damage is done and control is not necessary. If the foam really bothers you, simply use the water hose to wash it off of your plants.

Weed ID Workshop

Weeds are a plant out of place, right? Well as livestock producers, we are dealing with a lot of misplaced plants. Weeds rob our forages of nutrients and limit our forage yields, so why do we put up with them?
North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center will present a Weed ID and Management Workshop on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 6-8pm at the Burke County Agricultural Building.
The Burke County Cattlemen's Association will sponsor a meal with hamburgers and hotdogs for dinner. The program gets under way at 6:30 with topics including: weed identification, control methods, and effective pesticide use. There will be two hours of pesticide credits given for private applicators in the X category.
If you are a livestock producer in Burke County and would like to learn more about Weed ID and Management, please feel free to attend. Our goal is to provide producers with the information necessary to make sound decisions, pertinent to their operations, to identify and manage weeds in order to maximize forage production on their operations.

Catawba Valley Youth Livestock 
Showmanship Circuit Show

Don't forget to take in the Burke County Edition of the Catawba Valley Youth Livestock Showmanship Circuit, at the Burke County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 23, 2017, beginning at 9:00am. Youth will be exhibiting their livestock for points, that accumulate for the championship, culminating at the Cleveland County Fair in October.

It's the perfect time to treat your yard for next year's grubs. Japanese beetle and June bug grubs are hatching right now and if you kill them before they grow to be large, tough, indestructible grubs, you'll be way ahead of the game. Small grubs are easily killed at this time of year by applying products containing trichlorfon. Brands such as Dylox and Bayer 24 Hour Grub Control are easily found in area garden centers. They should be applied before the end of October because the grubs will dig deep in to the soil to avoid cold temperatures.
Always follow label directions when applying any pesticide. There are other grub remedies on the market that are used during the summer months. They work well at that time of the year but will not be effective now. The pesticide must contain Trichlorfon. Look at the active ingredient on the bag before you purchase it if you aren't sure.
If Japanese beetles or June bugs have been a problem this year, also encourage neighbors to treat their lawns too. Contrary to popular belief, you won't always see the grubs come to the surface of the soil when they die. Only June bug grubs do this. Japanese beetle grubs remain in the ground as they die. So don't think that the product is not working just because you don't see dead grubs.
So, get busy a take care of next year's problem today.

2017 NC Farm School Summit

The NC Farm School Summit is coming to western North Carolina to celebrate is 3rd year in bringing NC Farm School graduates together from across the state. NC Cooperative Extension Agents from several western counties are hosting anyone who is interested in gaining understanding of specific production practices. This will be an exciting two-day event for farmers interested in gaining knowledge in production.

Certified Food Protection Manager Course
North Carolina Cooperative Extension offers Safe Plates for all those who work in the food service industry. The course helps food establishments meet the requirement of having at least one supervisor certified as a food protection manager, a mandate of the FDA Food Code.
Cost of the course is $140. Registration and Payment deadline is September 15, 2017.
