A Word from the Pastor

Dear Friends,

Trying to be somewhat creative in coming up with an idea for this article, I thought, "Let's see what is being celebrated during the month of October that might give me some inspiration." Oh my, did I get a severe case of information overload. As I was looking through the days of October, I went straight to my birthday, and lo and behold, guess what we can celebrate on that day?

My grandson will love this-my birthday is also BE BALD AND BE FREE DAY!!!! Bald And Free Day is a day to toss aside all your head coverings and let the scalp breathe. I really don't have a problem with struggling to keep what I have, but it seems to be something that is quite funny to him. I guess it does get a little colder up there in the winter time.

And while I was looking, I also found some other celebrations that some of you might like to be aware of and be able to prepare ahead of time to have your own get-together or party. How about HAGFISH DAY . That's right, October 18 th is Hagfish Day, and if you're not aware of Hagfish, I encourage you to look it up; I did.

And then, of course, how can we talk about October celebrations without mentioning that October 18 th is also MEATLOAF APPRECIATION DAY. You can go to the website that's offered and find a multitude of resources full of nifty tips and ideas on how to increase awareness and just have a good fun day of merriment. These resources include graphs, badges, and ideas on what steps to take to boost Meatloaf Appreciation Day's visibility. The only disappointment I had was that there were no good recipe tips on the website.

We all know how annoying it can be to hear the sound of dripping water in the kitchen sink, especially when we think of all the money going down the drain. I'm sure that the amount of water wasted is difficult to predict, not knowing for sure the size of the leak. But the major silent thief in our homes is not the sink faucets; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that leaky toilets can steal about 200 gallons of water a day from our homes if not taken care of.

And so to combat this problem, October has been named as National Toilet Tank Repair Month. You can go to the website and find an online animated diagram to help you understand how this happens. It is suggested that you turn up the speakers for the full effect.

Every day of the year has something, actually, several "somethings" to celebrate, but I think it's important to remember every day is a reason to celebrate and be thankful for the blessings God has given us. I encourage you to make every day a day to pray and give thanks to God for the hope and peace that we can have in knowing Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior.

As I mentioned above, I got a case of information overload; and guess what - there's even a day on the calendar to celebrate Information Overload . Let's remember the main thing - celebrate every day as a gift from God.

Pastor Tony

One Other Day in October

I took Pastor Tony's advice and looked up national days of celebration in October. There's a very important one he failed to mention. The second Sunday of October is National Pastor Appreciation Day. Thanks for being a wonderful pastor to us here at Lowman.

Blessing Tree

Lowman United Methodist Church celebrated the 35th anniversary of our sanctuary. While it is a time for celebration, it is also a time for reflection. As our facility ages, we must look at the condition of this area as well as what is needed to bring it up-to-date. The sanctuary update will include replacing the carpet and pew fabric, improving the sound system and developing an area for the technology persons to operate more efficiently. Our heating and cooling systems will also need to be repaired or replaced. A major project means major expenses and the church needs a way to pay for them without incurring additional debt.

We have chosen to use a "Blessing Tree" as a fundraiser for our sanctuary project.

The area on the south wall next to the chapel has been chosen as the location for our tree. The trunk of the tree will be placed at the base of the wall with personalized leaves added to complete the tree. This is a "growing tree" since additional branches can be added and the program can continue indefinitely.

We invite you to participate in our Blessings Tree by donating a leaf or stone to be engraved with your special message of remembrance or congratulations All donations will be used for sanctuary projects.

The basic tree has been donated by the Lowman Memorials Committee in memory of loved ones.

You may choose to give a leaf for $250 or a foundation stone for $2,5000.

Greeters Needed

We have greeters and visitors desk people for October. Thanks to those of you who are helping in this way. Now we need people to sign up for November and beyond. Please check your calendars and sign up at the visitors desk.

Doorstep Corner

Fall is here! What a beautiful time of year, and the beginning of the holiday season!

Doorstep's fall fundraiser this year is tamales and cinnamon rolls. Susan Venis, Lowman's Doorstep coordinator, will be taking orders the first three Sundays in October.

The cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing (6 pack) are $9. These are perfect for the upcoming holidays. The tamales come in pork or beef (6 pack) and are $13. These are individually wrapped and frozen. You just have to heat and eat! You can pick up your orders at the church from Susan the weekend of November 3rd. Our fall fundraiser helps with client needs, operating expenses in the last quarter of the year, and with our Christmas Store for adopted families. Get your orders in and don't miss out on these yummy treats!

Also, keep an eye on school supplies and back packs as they go on clearance. Doorstep gives school supplies to the school aged children we adopt at Christmas. Pick up some great bargains, and help us restock these children for the second half of the school year. We are also low on toys for the Christmas Store; if you can help out we would appreciate it.

October Singles' Events

Lowman Singles will meet on Friday, October 13 at the church at 7:00 pm to watch a movie. Please bring a snack to share; the drinks will be provided.

On Saturday, October 28 we will be going to the home of Pastor Tony and Carla at 6:30 pm. They will provide the meat and potatoes. The rest of us will bring side dishes.

All singles ages 18 and over are welcome. Call the church office at 272-8921 for more information.

Saying Grace

A visiting pastor was attending a men's breakfast in farm country. He asked one of the older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began, "Lord, I hate buttermilk."

The pastor opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, "Lord, I hate lard."

Now the pastor was becoming worried. However without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, "And Lord, you know I don't care much for raw white flour."

Just as the pastor was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer continued, "But Lord, when you mix 'em all together and bake 'em up, I do love fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up we don't like, when life gets hard, when we just don't understand what You are sayin' to us, we just need to relax and wait 'till You are done mixin', and probably it will be somethin' even better than biscuits. Amen."

Thank You Notes

A big thanks to everyone who donated items for Doorstep's Christmas in July. Your gifts are much appreciated. They store all the new items in the basement and staff sorts through them to see what will still be needed in November and December. Since Doorstep adopts 250 families, it takes all of us giving together to help these people out. Thank you!
Susan Venis, Coordinator

Thank you to everyone for cards, calls, prayers and visits while I was in the hospital. Your visits made the days fuller and brighter; your cards and prayers made my journey shorter.
Liz Gragg

Thank you for the school supplies for our students. Your thoughts and generosity are appreciated. Our year did get started on the right foot!
Amy Wilson, 4th grade teacher

Thank you to our Lowman family for the cards and prayers we received at the death of Randy's mother. Your thoughts and support are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to the UMW for their donation of large size sweatshirts for Doorstep. It is very much appreciated and will be used at the Christmas Store in December.
Susan Venis, Doorstep Coordinator

Thanks so much for your wonderful response to "Lowman's Got Talent VI." We had a large and enthusiastic crowd which made it as much fun for the performers as for those in attendance. We brought in slightly more than $3,000 for our Choir Scholarship fund with 10% of that going to Mission Shares. A special thanks to members of the Worship Team and Tech Team for all their help in putting on a great show.
Jeannie Gish

Thank you to Madelyn Franzke, Janet Schalansky, Carla Hazen, Susan Vargas, Angela Hartness, Carol Babcck, Bess Brewer, Susan Conrade, and Patty Bottorff for the cakes you brought for our Back to Church Sunday celebration.

Also, thank you to Lori Davenport, Carla Hazen, Jeanie Thode, Alora Johnson, and Angela Hartness for serving ice cream and cake. We had a good turnout.

Many thanks to Rosie Cooper for donating coffee and creamer for our fellowship coffee time each Sunday.

Join Our Mailing List
Lowman United Methodist Church is a "W + 2" congregation. Our membership covenant calls for all our members to participate in worship weekly and to take part in at least two small groups--one that is designed to help each member grow spiritually, and one that is designed to help each member be of service in the congregation and/or in the community.
