This coffee is kind of in keeping with the spirit of Halloween: it a kind of mutant, from the old world. Not arabica, not robusta, Liberica is an other-worldly coffee. Honestly, it tends to be a "love it or hate it" coffee, and we love it! It's a natural process coffee from a biodynamic farm, from ancient trees (literally, 80+ years old) and comes at you with fruit, but it has a pleasant astringency. (Foods that are often astringent include red wine, some teas, soy-based foods, and certain fruits, especially when they're not yet ripe. In these foods, astringency is caused by the polyphenolic compounds they contain.) Liberia makes a fabulous espresso and is the base coffee in our Trastevere espresso blend. I don't know what the weather is like where you're at. Here, in North Carolina, it feels more like August than October. So, instead of focusing on fall-like weather, let's concentrate on the month of October. I think about the leaves changing colors, gently falling to the ground and crunching under my feet. Then there's the hayrides at the pumpkin patch; feeling the scratchy hay as I bump along in the wagon to the perfect pumpkin picking spot.
