Monthly news from Washington Park United Methodist Church

Dreams drive us. Our hopes and aspirations for the future compel us to set goals, take action, and make a dream come alive. Some dreams are attainable in our lifetime - a dream to land a specific job, a dream to have a family, a dream to visit a different country. And some dreams are bigger than our personal goals, capture the hearts of others, and become the dream of generations to follow - a dream of peace, a dream of equality, a dream of a world where no one is hungry and everyone has a friend.

We are in a season of dreaming at WPUMC. Our ministries are strong, our presence in the community is vital, and our members and friends are growing in relationship with God and one another. So, what's next for us as a congregation? What new areas of ministry and community presence might we explore?

WPUMC leadership invites you to DREAM BIG this October! We will be hearing stories of biblical dreams in our sermon series, participating in a study with the book "Dare to Dream" by Mike Slaughter, celebrating our youth and children, and dedicating our gifts and offerings for the coming year. We invite you to dream without limits, to create a vision for the next generation of ministry at WPUMC, and to share your dreams with us.

You can do this in a couple of ways. One is to participate in the online survey that will be open for the first part of the month. We will also participate in a written survey during worship on Oct 8 and 15. Additionally, mark your calendars for Sunday, November 12, when we will have more focused questions (based on the responses from the surveys outlined above) to engage you in conversation with others in our congregation about dreams for the future. Or, you can always contact the church office or email church leadership with your thoughts and ideas.

All of this information will be processed by our church leadership and used to set new vision goals for 2018.

Together, let's open wide the understanding of what it means to be a church in the Wash Park neighborhood, and dream a new dream for life, love and hope!

Peace,

Pastor Sandi Dillon,

Fall Festival: Oct 28
Join us for a hayride, carnival games, and food trucks

Our annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. There will be games for all ages, a horse-drawn hayride through the neighborhood, and food trucks. Bring the whole family and invite your friends! Halloween costumes are strongly encouraged for children and adults.

Community Woven Altar Cloth
Bring one yard of ribbon

Don't miss out on your opportunity to participate in our woven altar cloth. Throughout September during worship, we looked at the ways we are woven together in community by Love, Justice, Mission and Hope. Mr. Rev. Jamielee (aka Jordan) built us a loom to weave together ribbons that represent us and our families. In mid-October, volunteers will sew the weaving together into an altar cloth that represents our faith family.

You are invited to bring a ribbon (1 yard in length) that represents you or your family (or both).  Additionally, if you don't have time to get to the fabric store, there are lots of ribbons to choose from. I will keep the loom up until after worship on Sunday, October 15. Please bring a ribbon and help create a beautiful tapestry of community together!  Let Rev. Sandi know if you have any questions.

October Book Study
"Dare to Dream" by Mike Slaughter

Are your goals too small? Are you living the "just get by" plan? Or is there a greater "God dream" for you that, if lived to the fullest, could permeate and inform every move you make?

This book study will m eet in church family homes or at a local coffee shop for a one-time gathering and discussion on the book. Look for clipboards and online sign-ups soon!

Youth Ministry
Youth Group meets regularly after worship service

We have just loved our first month together and we're so excited to welcome all the fun October has to offer. Our theme this fall is discovering personal identity and getting to know yourself as a creation in God's image. This month, we'll be talking about our identity and purpose. Why are we here and what are we supposed to do with all this life? In addition to that, we'll be participating in the Fall Festival by making a crazy maze for our community. If you'd like to volunteer with the youth program or assist in future events, please contact Rev. Jamielee.

October Schedule:
October 1 - We're discussing God, Identity and Society, and writing a benediction for our church family
October 8 - NO YOUTH GROUP
October 15 - Preparing sandwiches for Socks & Sandwiches
October 22 - Children and Youth Sabbath (No Youth Group after service, since we'll all be leading worship)
October 27 (Friday) - Fall Festival setup from 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm (pizza will be provided)
October 28 (Saturday) - Fall Festival! Get here early to get in place at 2:00 pm, Festival starts at 3:00 pm)
October 29 - What's your purpose? (Regular Youth Group time)

Children's Ministry
Lunch Bunch & Club 456 meets on October 21

The Children's Ministry team is having a great time working with your children using the Gospel Project curriculum. We have volunteer options available to help lead a group during Sunday School, help out as a substitute, for special gatherings like 5th Sunday of the month or Lunch Bunch/Club 456. Please let me know if you are interested or I may just ask you myself!

Lunch Bunch/Club456 is coming up on Saturday, October 21. We will meet in the larger preschool/Sunday School classroom downstairs, from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. This event is for kids ages 3 and potty-trained through 6th grade. We invite you to bring a lunch and plan on some games, activities and community outside of regular Sunday School. Please RSVP to [email protected] by October 20. Please bring a friend! I look forward to hosting your kids while you enjoy a few free hours.

Third Grade Bibles and Children/Youth Sunday is October 22. We will present our third graders with their own Bibles from the congregation during the beginning of the service. Please let me know if you have a third grader or older child who has not received a Bible. Our service will be run by Park Youth and Park Kids with Rev. Sandi giving the sermon. If your child would like to have a part, there are spaces for ushers, prayer time, welcoming visitors, and more opportunities. Please let us know so we can get their names in the printed bulletins by Wednesday, October 18. Sunday School will be hosting a movie in lieu of a Sunday School lesson this week.

It's not too early to think about Christmas in these ways:
  • Donating a back pack or small suitcase for Christmas in the Park. See the poster and bins in the Narthex.
  • Joining the Children's Choir for the Christmas Cantata
  • Donating socks, granola bars, personal hygiene products, and small water bottles for Bags of Hope
Look for information about Parents' Night Out sponsored by the Park Youth for a fundraiser and more information on the Children's Choir under Music on the website, the Link, or weekly e-mails

It's a blessing to serve your children and this community! Please reach out to me with any concerns or questions.

WPUMC Vision: What's your opinion?
Take a short survey

As a church, we will revisit WPUMC's vision statement this fall. We need to hear from YOU! Please let us know what you think about various topics related to the church by taking this short (5-minute) online survey. Then join us for coffee and conversation about the church vision after worship service on November 12.

Missions

Pura Vida Ministries will hold a Benefit Dinner and Celebration on Friday, October 20 in Lakewood, Colorado. The dinner will provide an opportunity to join in the celebration of the success of Pura Vida's Guatemala ministries.   Please join Pura Vida to hear more about these and other successful ministries. For more details about the event and to order tickets, go to http://www.puravida.org/dinner , or call Nickie Rounds at Pura Vida at (303) 632-8191.

Habitat for Humanity
Can you keep a Christmas Secret? Introducing our Habitat for Humanity Partner Family

For our upcoming Habitat for Humanity build, our Loaves and Fishes Coalition will collaborate with Francisco and Lisa. This partnership means that Habitat, Loaves and Fishes, Lisa, and Francisco will work together to build a house for this large family. After Lisa and Francisco complete the Habitat requirements and their sweat-equity hours, Habitat sells the home to them at an affordable mortgage rate. There is no down payment on the home, and Habitat sets a monthly mortgage payment that does not exceed 30% of the family's gross monthly income. This partnership and new home will make an incredible difference for this wonderful family!

Francisco and Lisa have a large family. Since they live in a dangerous apartment complex, they worry about the gang and drug activity, fights, and even shootings that occur in the area. They look forward to moving their children into a safe environment that provides them with the space they need. However, Lisa and Francisco are keeping the good news a secret from their family in hopes of revealing the great news in December! This secret will be a tough one to keep, but it sounds like it might be worth the wait. Therefore, we will share a family picture and more family details once the children have been told about this amazing surprise! We are also keeping our partner family's information off of social media to help them keep this exciting secret.

Washington Park UMC has been part of the Loaves and Fishes Coalition since 2006. That means we collaborated with 11 different and deserving families to build 11 different homes!

This year, Wash Park UMC will build a Habitat for Humanity home in October and November and then take a break until January of 2018. We welcome you and would love your help with this amazing opportunity! No experience is necessary, and the Habitat staff provides training for all tasks done each day. The house is located at 3701 S. Julian St., Sheridan, CO 80236. Registration is required a few days before you work on site and space is limited. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. The work day is from 9:00 AM sharp until approximately 4:00 PM with a lunch break for 45 minutes.

As of late September, our Coalition helps Habitat on the following days. Availability does change, so please contact Carol Nelson (303.810.4635 or [email protected] ) to determine which dates are currently available.
