Many people are wondering what tangible action they can take during this time of political
uncertainty. Applying for a seat as a Commissioner for the Department of Civil Rights provides that
tangible opportunity to promote and protect Minneapolis residents' civil rights.
Established in 1975, the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights assists in implementing Minneapolis
City's Civil Rights policies through: public information, research, case review, and education.
As a Commissioner you will:
* Represent your Ward and act as a liaison between the Department of Civil Rights and your
fellow neighbors relating to civil rights;
* Serve on appellate review panels for appealed department determinations;
* Educate, encourage, and dialogue through outreach about civil rights laws, growing issues of
concern within your Ward, and the greater Minneapolis community;
* Advise the Mayor, City Council, and City agencies with respect to Civil Rights matters; and
* Conduct research and studies that address Civil Rights Ordinances objectives.
You must be a resident of the City of Minneapolis. All applicants are welcome and needed. Attorneys
in good standing are highly encouraged to apply. Applications are received on a rolling basis.
However, to begin starting January 2018 we ask you submit your application no later than the close
