Ribbons Cut for Two New Affordable Assisted Living Communities
Federal, state, county and city officials gathered together on Friday, Aug. 25, for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of The Montclare of Lawndale Supportive Living community. The $27.7 million development features 120 private studio and one-bedroom apartments for adults 65 and over of all incomes, including those who are on or would qualify for Medicaid.

Earlier in August, a preview party and ribbon cutting ceremony was held for Belvedere Senior Housing. The affordable assisted living community is located in Merrillville, Indiana. The three-story building features 126 one-bedroom apartments for low-income older adults.

Both communities are being managed by Gardant.
 
Groundbreaking Alzheimer's Discovery
CBS Boston reports that researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found a way to reverse memory loss in mice.
 
Prolonged Sitting and the Risk of Death
Prolonged sitting and the lack of physical activity can be a deadly combination for adults 50 years of age and older, says a report posted on the Medical News Today website about research done in Canada.
 
Another report posted on the Medical News Today website suggests that just one hour of moderate physical activity a day can mitigate the risks of prolonged sitting.
 
Walking to End Alzheimer's
Gardant Management Solutions staff members are teaming up to participate in the 2017 Kankakee and Iroquois Counties Walk to End Alzheimer's at Perry Farm on Saturday, Sept. 16.
 
Dancing and Your Balance
Physical exercise can have an anti-aging effect on the brains of older adults. A report posted last week on the ScienceDaily website focused on new research that compared endurance and flexibility training with dancing. The study showed that learning new dance routines had a more profound impact, including measurable improvements in balance.

Home Foreclosures among Older Adults
A story posted last week on the Washington Post website indicates that an increasing number of older adults are facing foreclosures after taking out reverse mortgages.
 
Opening Nears for McHenry Memory Care
The opening of White Oaks memory care community in McHenry, Illinois, is fast approaching. The $12 million development is located on property adjacent to the Heritage Woods of McHenry affordable assisted living community.

Hearing Loss and Medical Errors
Hearing loss likely increases the risk of medical errors because of miscommunication and misunderstandings between doctors and patients, says a HealthDay story posted on the philly.com website.

High Blood Pressure and Mental Abilities of Older Adults
A HealthDay report posted on the Medline Plus website indicates that individuals with high blood pressure are more likely to experience declines in their mental abilities. To best protect their minds, older adults who have hypertension should take steps to lower their blood pressure.

What is Normal as You Get Older
What is considered to be a normal part of the aging process? The Mayo Clinic has information available about what you can expect and what you can do about it. 

Testimonial and Photo Contest Winners
Communities managed by Gardant took the top three spots in the annual Testimonial Contest conducted by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition. First place honors went to Cambridge House of O'Fallon; second place to Prairie Winds of Urbana; and third place to Heritage Woods of Flora. Honorable mentions went to testimonials submitted by residents of GateWay at River City in Peoria; John Evans Supportive Living in Pekin; New City Supportive Living in Chicago; and Prairie Winds of Urbana.
 
In AALC's annual photo contest, the Cupid's Couple from Heritage Woods of Charleston won the third place award. Honorable mentions went to Eagle Ridge of Decatur; Heritage Woods of Centralia; Heritage Woods of Rockford; and John Evans in Pekin.

August 21 Solar Eclipse Experience
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse was visible in parts of southern Illinois. Some Gardant-managed affordable assisted living communities took part in the fun. Two communities, Prairie Living at Chautauqua in Carbondale and Heritage Woods of Benton, were in the path of totality.
