The strong connections we build are engraved upon us like the notches of the White Mountains. Some of these connections walk beside us as we continue life's journey, while others are faces from the past who will continue to influence us for eternity. They mold our daily interactions, they influence our decisions, and they help us grow.

Special Olympics Charity Event - Saturday, September 9th
As you know Special Olympics has been Law Enforcement's favorite charity for many years. Members of our Department will be teaming up with Special Olympics Athletes for the annual Serve & Protect, part of Irving Oil's "fueling dreams campaign". This event will be held on Saturday, September 9th from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon at the the Circle K at 425 High Street (across from Wal-mart).
The athletes and staff working the event will be pumping gas and washing windows. There will be "donation" buckets for those that wish to give towards this great charity. Circle K will be selling Special Olympic "window clings" for $1.00 in an effort to raise additional funds.
Each year, Irving Oil also makes a corporate donation of $105,000 in New England to the program that helps athletes achieve their goals and attend sporting events across the nation. The fundraising goal is to exceed $500,000. This year, Irving Oil has donated over $36,000 in New Hampshire.
Since the partnership started in 1999, To Serve & Protect has raised over $1.6 million for Special Olympics New Hampshire.

Substance Misuse Assistance
We have partnered with Avis Goodwin, Wentworth Douglass Hospital and volunteer Recovery Coaches to offer "Community Access to Recovery" aimed at providing help to those suffering from misuse disorders. Simply come into the police station and ask for assistance. We will arrange for assistance for you.

National Night Out - Thank you
We wish to thank everyone for taking part in the National Night Out held August 1st at Jules Bisson Park. This totally free family event was sponsored by the Community Prevention Coalition.
We had a great turn out this year with a lot of games, free hot dogs, Police, Fire, City Officials and the American Ambulance Crew....and lots of happy children, with one very wet Detective Sergeant.
We look forward to next year.

Fire Department Open House
The Annual Fire Department Open House will be held on Saturday October 7 from 10am to 2pm. There will be displays from the Fire Department utilizing the "Fire Safety House" and live fire extinguisher training. Other agencies there will be the Somersworth Police: American Ambulance: Wentworth Douglass Hospital: the NH Division of Forest and Lands: and Smokey the Bear.
Refreshments will be provided as well.
Schools Back in Session
A word of caution to all drivers: School is back in session and children will be walking back and forth to and from school. Exercise care when driving as sometimes children are distracted when walking and may venture out into traffic without warning.
Open Burning continues in September. Remember that the state requires a Permit be obtained from the Fire Department before burning occurs. Generally, unless it is raining, no burning can occur until after 5pm and there are restrictions on what can be burned: distances from combustible construction or vegetation: and the size of materials to be burned.

Highway Crews Conduct End of the Summer Maintenance Work
Public Works Highway crews have been busy with addressing several maintenance functions as the summer winds down. All City streets have been swept at least once and special sweeping occurs on a demand basis; selected catch basins have been repaired; personnel completed repainting of all crosswalks and stop bars, and have conducted road side brush clearing to improve sight distance at street intersections. In addition, the Department is working directly with specific property owners to address excessive growth of vegetation that contributes to vehicular line of sight issues.
Permits Needed When Working in the Public Right of Way
The Department reminds property owners and contractors that street/sidewalk obstruction permits are required if you will be occupying streets, parking spaces or sidewalks, or portions thereof for any building repairs or maintenance projects. Permits may be obtained on the City's website under the Engineering Division website located at: http://www.somersworth.com/departments-services/public-works/engineering/; bring completed form to the Public Works Facility located at 18 Lilac Lane and a check made payable to the City of Somersworth for $50. Department staff will review the permit and determine what, if any, type of safety barricades, protection or sidewalk access must be maintained during the project, as well as the need for any insurance certificates for bonding.
Road Repaving Work Planned in Later Fall
The City Council approved a contract award to Pike Industries for repaving six (6) streets and conducting spot repairs on selected streets including Salmon Falls Road, this year. Streets scheduled for mill and overlay work include:
-Maple Street from Blackwater Road to Linden Street
-Hillside Street
-Blackwater Road from Rte. 108 to High Street
-Green Street from Franklin Street to Washington Street
-Rocky Hill Road from Otis Road to Winter Street
-Winter Street from Rocky Hill Road to Market Street
Green Street to be Repaved
The District 6 NHDOT office reports that they will be overlaying Green Street from the Dover/Rollinsford town line to Somersworth's Indigo Hill Road in September as part of its regional road maintenance work. It is anticipated that the repaving work will be a 2-3 day project once started. State contractors have already begun preparation work along the corridor including the recent installation of a replacement culvert on Green Street at Stackpole Road. Look for additional announcements on the City's website, email blasts and the local media.
Severino Trucking Completes Indigo Hill Road Improvements
Severino Trucking and their personnel completed the road, sidewalk and utility improvements on Indigo Hill Road. A set of solar powered flashing lights will be installed at the new crosswalk installed at Indigo Hill Road and Chapel Street to enhance the safety for pedestrians using sidewalks in this area.

Fall Story Times
The new schedule of Story Times begins on Tuesday, September 12. Story times each week are Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. and Friday at 10:00 a.m. Story Times include several stories from the Library's extensive picture book and early reader collections followed by a craft or activity related to the weeks theme. Each program lasts about 45 minutes. No registration is required. Join us in the adventure and fun!!

Somersworth Farm to School Project
Waste Not Want Not at Somersworth Middle School
How much food do we waste? At home? In our schools? Turns out it's a lot and this fall the Somersworth Middle School seeks to make a big change.
Middle School teacher John Dinger's efforts have finally paid off to make large scale composting a reality for the Middle School. Thanks to collaborative funds through SYC and NH Farm to School, September will start the school's one-year contract with Mr. Fox of Portsmouth NH. Mr. Fox services the greater seacoast area by providing bins and liners for food waste, weekly pick up, and outreach and support in order to start and sustain the process successfully. Instead of all waste going into the trash, all compostable materials will be separated out and picked up by one of Mr. Fox's friendly drivers, brought to their facility, and turned into rich organic soil. In exchange, the Somersworth School District will receive a return-on-investment of a cubic yard of composted soil. With gardens at the Middle School, Idlehurst, Plants for Growth, and an ADA garden bed to be installed at the Maple Wood Elementary School, this soil will have plenty of uses. And our Middle-Schoolers will receive hands-on education on sustainability that will hopefully follow them throughout their lives.

 Somersworth Youth Connection (SYC)
This Fall!
SYC is excited to be starting another school year this fall! With extended-day learning programs at both the elementary and middle school level starting on Tuesday, September 5th. The SYC programs offer many dynamic and exciting clubs and activities developed in collaboration by certified teachers, education professionals, and students like skateboard design: "Paint and Skate", slime making: "Slime Time", Crocheting, Video Editing, woodworking, art, chess club, and so much more. SYC strives to offer programming that enriches the lives of students in many ways including social emotional learning, academic and homework supports, building leadership skills, creating a sense of community, and strengthening values.

The elementary program is held at Idlehurst Monday through Friday with transportation from Maple Wood, and the middle school program is held at SMS Monday through Thursday, with periodic Drop-In Nights on Fridays. Somersworth Churches Past and Present Celebrated
Sunday September 17, 2017 - 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Summersworth Historical Museum, 157 Main Street
Summersworth Historical Museum will be holding an event where we will celebrate the Churches of Somersworth both past and present.
From it's inception in 1823 when a Quaker saw an opportunity churches have payed an important part in the city. The first Church erected was that of the Congregational Church which now holds the business, the Hall At Great Falls. Interestingly enough they beat the High St. Methodist Church by a mere six days and that building now houses the VFW in Somersworth.
Next came the Catholic Holy Trinity church which was followed by St Martins. Neither of those Churches stand in their original building place today having been replaced by their more modern counterparts. The Summersworth Historical Museum holds many of the artifacts from the original Churches of Somersworth as well as pictures and we think that's something worth celebrating.
The Museum's board cordially invites the public and current church members to come and share in Somersworth's Churches rich past. This event will take place between 12.30 and 3.30pm on Sunday September 17th 2017 at the Summersworth Historical Museum, 157 Main Street, Somersworth, NH.
All are welcomed and encouraged to attend this event.
