Major League Baseball (MLB) Recognizes Westland Historic Village Baseball Match

Westland, MI - The Westland Historic Commission will be hosting a Vintage Baseball Game on Saturday, September 9 at Westland's Jaycee Park, located at 6210 Wildwood.  The game will be played with 1867 rules when there was no designated hitter and there were no mitts.  The Greenfield Village La-De-Dahs will be playing an exhibition game against a team made up of supporters of Westland's Historic preservation efforts including Mayor William R. Wild and other local officials.  There is no admission fee for this event, but snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

The event will kick off at 11:00 a.m. with a special ribbon cutting ceremony for the brand new baseball diamond at Jaycee Park that will include several dignitaries and members of Westland's Youth Athletic Association.  The game will begin immediately following the ribbon cutting at 12:00 p.m. and will be played until 3:00 p.m.

This event is also being recognized by Major League Baseball (MLB) as part of a unique partnership with the U.S. Conference of Mayors in an effort to provide opportunities to play baseball for youth in communities across America.  As part of the event, the Westland team will don Major League Baseball shirts and they will be distributed to the crowd as well.  Supplies are limited to the first 200 spectators.

"This historic base ball game represents exactly what the Westland Historic Village Park is looking to do within the city," commented Historical Commissioner  Jeff Koslowski.  "By working with our All-American city, we are preserving and teaching our nation's past and at the same time, fundraising for another project. All proceeds will go toward exhibit design and construction for the Eloise Museum which we will he opening very soon."
