Take Action for Hunger-Free Schools!!
SB 138 (McGuire) Heads to Governor Brown

Your action for hunger-free schools is working! We need you more than ever- this is the final stretch! SB 138 needs to clear  one last hurdle to become law. The bill passed the Legislature with bipartisan, unanimous votes. Gov Brown now has 30 days to sign or veto SB 138.

SB 138 would seamlessly enroll more than 650,000 students into school meals through Medi-Cal Direct Certification, and ensures that high-poverty schools serve breakfast and lunch free of charge to all students through federal universal meal provisions.

Many of you saw the great news that New York City made school meals universally free to all students. link That success was due to Medicaid direct certification and Community Eligibility- and the strong advocacy of community. SB 138 would make that success possible in California as well!

The Governor must sign SB 138 by Oct. 15th. We don't know exactly when the Governor will consider the bill, so the sooner you voice your support the better! Tell your coworkers, friends, family, and network to take action today. It's easy!
