Warning Out in New England
Presented by Janet Beiner
Also on Wednesday, October 11,  1:00 p.m.
at Applewood Valley United Methodist Church

How can warning out notices help genealogists? Find out from Janet Beiner, an NSDAR trained Volunteer Field Genealogist.

What is "warning out"? To control homelessness, vagrancy, and poverty, New England towns relied heavily on the "warning out" system inherited from English law. The process focused on the eligibility of transients to receive poor relief from their most recent town of residence. Colonial towns usually denied residency for two reasons: potential for public dependency and religious differences. "Warning out" did not necessarily mean actual removal but rather a simple notification from the town to the transient that he was not eligible for poor relief.

Janet, a Past Regent of Front Range Chapter, National Society of Daughter of the American Revolution, is passionate about the history and legacy that genealogical research preserves.  Applewood Valley United Methodist Church, 2035 Ellis St., Golden, CO 80401.

Tuesday, Nov 7:  Last day to turn in ballots for 2017 elections.
--------------
About the film "Bob Roberts" 1992:
In the tradition of This Is Spinal Tap, producer/ director/ star Tim Robbins' Bob Roberts is a satire disguised as a documentary. Robbins plays the titular Roberts, a wealthy, well-connected young man running for a senatorial seat in Pennsylvania. On the surface, Roberts is an ingratiating glad-hander, a sincere believer in the restoration of such intangibles as national pride, family values, etc. But the longer Roberts is followed about by documentary filmmaker Brian Murray, the more we become aware that the candidate is a textbook case of cynicism and contempt. Only Giancarlo Esposito, a reporter for an underground newspaper, is willing to dig beneath Roberts' veneer--a habit that leads to the film's ironic conclusion. Several well-known actors make cameo appearances as TV commentators, notably Tim Robbins' longtime partner Susan Sarandon.

About the Documentary: Strong Sisters: Elected Women in Colorado:  The extraordinary story of elected women in Colorado. The compilation of oral histories from past and current female elected officials is the foundation for this documentary film by  Laura Hoeppner  and  Meg Froelich.     www.StrongSisters.org

Renewable energy:
Why it is critical to our future

The public is welcome to attend an  Oct. 5  panel discussion on local efforts toward sustainable communities. Hosted by the League of Women Voters Jeffco, it will focus on renewable energy: what's been accomplished, what's in progress and why it's important.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Golden Community Center, 1470 10th St., Golden, 80401. After review by League members and if time permits, questions will be answered. Representatives from Jefferson County, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Westminster, Arvada and Golden are expected to participate.

The keynote speaker will be Frank Rukavina , the Sustainability Director at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden. He leads the sustainable development initiatives that drive NREL's campus of the future: a carbon neutral, net-zero energy laboratory.

The League's Sustainability Committee member Pat Mesec said the committee began asking communities nine years ago what local plans were in place to work toward a sustainable community. "Now we have gone back and asked the same question with the hope that some initiatives and accomplishments will be explained." she said.

Pietro and his father, Antonio, were cornet virtuosos in Italy. When Antonio's wife dies in childbirth, he is motivated to come to America to start anew and make sure that Pietro can attain an international reputation. In America, they are revered for their musical talents but despised by some because of prejudice against Italians. Pietro finds himself in the headlines for being flamboyant and having unusual body movements while performing and is criticized for being light on the classics and giving in to public demand and performing ragtime. Through the years, the story unfolds to reveal Antonio's drinking problem, Pietro's passionate personality and angry outbursts, his love of teaching children about music, a clandestine affair, and his amazing talent, which ultimately won him national recognition as a bandleader and musical personality in the early 1900s.
