Recovery Updates - Afternoon Report

Helping Monroe County:
Members of the Coral Gables Fire Department have been called on to provide mutual aid support in response to recovery efforts in Monroe County.   Lieutenant Victor Alpizar, Firefighters/Paramedics Ricky Fernandez, Julio Torres and Steve Turpin have been deployed as part of a State of Florida Region 7 Strike Team.  Fifteen fire engines and 15 rescues have been sent to the Florida Keys with firefighters from Palm Beach County to Coral Gables.   Our crew was deployed this past Wednesday and will be in Monroe till Monday.   They will be responding to 911 emergency calls, assisting with restoration efforts and giving Monroe County-based first responders a much needed break so that they can tend to their homes and families.

Garbage:
Sanitation collection crews will be working tomorrow Sunday to collect any missed areas. Regular recycling and trash collection has been suspended until further notice.

Debris Removal:
City crews are on the road collecting and hauling debris. The debris monitoring/processing operation has been underway since early this morning.  Residents are reminded to place only landscape/vegetative material in debris piles - No plastic bags or non-landscape material may be placed in debris piles.  If your landscape service is assisting in cutting and clearing on your property, limbs and branches must be cut to 4'-6' lengths so they can be picked up by collection equipment.

City residents may hire landscapers to perform landscape work and debris removal activities on Sundays for the next 30 days as the community rebounds from Hurricane Irma.

Traffic Lights:
  • Ponce de Leon /LeJeune Rd /Grand Av. still out;
  • US1 / Granada Blvd still out;
  • 22 traffic light signals are still inoperative;
  • Cones or barricades are in placed at these intersections to remind drivers to make it a 4-way stop when a traffic light is out.
Help for Seniors:
The Adult Activity Center (ACC) and the War Memorial Youth Center are both open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, to welcome seniors that still don't have electricity and may be looking for a cool place to stay until power is restored. The ACC is open both days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Youth Center opens Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please enter the Youth Center through the side entrance door since the front entrance is closed until further notice. The Youth Center is available for other age groups as well and will have Wi-Fi, the gym for basketball, fitness center, the playground, and the outdoor court open. The gymnastics programs will be starting.
