Fall ESL Course Registration
Registration is September 5-16th, 2017
Twelve ESL courses are offered at our two classroom locations that run over a 12-week semester. Courses include two Saturday beginner classes, one for conversation and one for reading to meet our working adults. This semester, our English for Work course will focus on writing. Registration begins Tuesday, Sept.5th with classes beginning the week of September 25th. Group ESL courses are provided for at fee with donations accepted. Visit our website for a full

Worcester Women's Oral History Project at LVGW
We have collaborated with the Worcester Women's Oral History Project in 2017 to bring to light the stories of our female tutored students who immigrated to the Worcester area.
The
WWOHP
records, collects, and shares the personal and historical memories of women throughout the Worcester community. LVGW staff (Sheila, Amy & Jolene) were trained by WWOHP to interview and transcribe student stories for the project. We are grateful to the incredible women who volunteered to share their stories of immigration; Carmenza, Edna and Yahui. They will be our guests at the LVGW Annual Meeting on 10/25/17. ESL Forum:
Worcester Community Connections Coalition and LVGW
Jolene Jennings, LVGW Executive Director and Amy West, Program Manager have been fully engaged in the ESL Forum collaboration for several months in Worcester. There has been a core group of ESL providers participating in this forum which has been led by WCCC and sponsored by GWCF. After many community strategy and planning meetings, two objectives were set:
- Categorize levels of ESL Course offerings at area ESL providers for students
- Develop a plan for a part-time community ESL Navigator for community
Thank you to WCCC for leading this ESL Forum partnership to work together.

Opening the Pages to FY17: Numbers Matter!
610 Students' received English language skill education to reach for the short-term goal of English proficiency and move toward the long term goal of individual and family economic security.
Many students reach set goals throughout the year, reported goals this year include:
- 75% of BP assessed tutored students improved their ESL performance level
- 34 Participated in the English for Work course to improve employability
-
3 Students obtain Citizenship
- 8 Gained new or better Employment
-
4 Enrolled in higher education
Your contributions make an impact to continue our English language education programming for ESL and ABE adult students to meet English language proficiency, the foundation to Economic Security. A $10/25/50 donation will greatly support our mission to provide English language skills to help people thrive in Worcester County.

Interested in a Volunteer Experience?
Join LVGW in the United Way Day of Caring on 9/14/2017!
This will be our second year participating in this day of volunteerism in the community. Students, tutors, volunteers and staff are invited to join our team to make a difference.

f you enjoy being outdoors and in the vegetable garden-this volunteer experience is for you.
Great opportunity for our students to learn about volunteering and community engagement. Tutor/Student pairs are encouraged to join us.

2017 LVGW Annual Meeting
The Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester 2017 Annual Meeting is Wednesday, October 25th from 6-7:30pm at Worcester State University. Invitations will be emailed out the end of September. Our students; Carmenza, Eda and Yahui, will share a little about their immigration stories as shared with the LVGW/WWOHP. Pease register by inviation or contact Sheila McManus before 10/15/17.

Our next ESL Tutor Training is scheduled for October!
This 18-hour training will be held over six days;
October 12, 17, 19, 26, 24, and 31 from 3-6 pm.

International Potluck - November 16th
The
International Potluck Lunch for Students, Tutors and Faculty is on Thursday, November 16 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm in the Banx Room at the Worcester Public Library
. Please bring your favorite entree, side dish or dessert to share! This is a fun annual event, and a chance to catch up and socialize with other tutors, students and staff. Contact Melissa for further information.

Thanks to Worcester - the City that Reads!
Thanks to Worcester, the City that Reads, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester was able to give students donated books to take home for keeps at the end of the winter and summer semesters. Having reading material available in the home in an important part of literacy.

Millbury Small Group Tutoring
In response to a request from the Millbury Public Schools call for ESL help, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester recruited three of our current tutors to
instruct a small group of Millbury parents in need from January to May, 2017.
Tutors; Sandy Caldwell, Judy Nolfi, and Jennifer Moore (
not pictured)
provided valuable ESL instruciton with the "Millbury Moms" (and a Dad!) The
Helping Your Schoolchildren
model was integrated in the educaiton at the Millbury Public Library for this offsite pilot . This collaboration with the school and library location was key to launching this small tutoring group pilot. A great community collaboration! Thank you all!

Summer Reading Course
LVGW students enjoyed reading Sandra Cisneros's
The House on Mango Street
in a Summer Reading course and reading circle that focused on reading fiction for pleasure.
Students got to keep their copies of the book and worked on reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation through the stories and discussion.
This
prepared students
to
launch into the WPL summer reading program!
Kathy Stolz, a current tutor, led the reading circle during August for our intersession class offerings for current students. Pleasure reading of any kind is important for literacy to grow.

Community Engagement: Summer Style
We hope you were able to join us at Out to Lunch Event at the Worcester Common. Staff, Students and Tutors all participated in experiencing this community event in Worcester. Music, food, information, collaboration, friends and some sunshine!

Build a Better World Summer Reading Program
Our students were excited to participate in the WPL Summer Reading Program. LVGW students, Carla & Basanta (left to right),receive prizes for their level of participation from WPL and proudly display their prizes.
This is a community partnership that our students enjoyed and we greatly appreciate.Thank you Worcester Public Library!
