September 1, 2017
Greetings!

Water rates. We have been talking about rates for quite some time, and we have completed a fiscal review of our water operations fund. Now we need your help making recommendations to the City Council. We’re looking for a few brave citizens to serve on a Water Rate Advisory Committee. This committee will help us evaluate the financial information, long-term water demand, and other information to be sure we are best serving the community in the long-run. You don’t have to be a fiscal wizard to help – just a resident who is interested in water rates and our water future. Interested? Go here to learn more and apply.
On the Agenda...

Your Council will meet next Tuesday, September 5th in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. The Council has a very full agenda, starting with a public hearing to establish an underground utility district in the Green Island industrial area. This action will allow the City to underground the utility poles along Green Island Road next year when the road is widened and reconstructed. The American Canyon Community and Parks Foundation will be asking the City Council to commit $50,000 toward the Clarke Ranch park project, still in the design phase, near the Wetlands Edge trailhead. Additionally, the Council will consider adding a Parks Project Coordinator position to help move park and open space projects along. The City Council will hear a presentation and consider kicking off the process to annex into the City limits the area around Watson Lane, east of Paoli Loop Road. Finally, the Council will consider improving and re-starting the popular Cash for Grass program, establishing a Veterans preference policy for hiring new City employees, and hear an update on the highway signal interconnect and Devlin Road construction projects. Heat Related Updates

Newell Open Space is closed until Monday morning due to a red flag advisory.

A Cooling Center will be available on Saturday, September 2nd from 12 - 6 PM at 2185 Elliott Drive in American Canyon.

The Phillip West Aquatic Center will be open 2-5 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The American Canyon Library will be offering free family friendly movies from 10:30 AM - 5 PM on Saturday.

The Napa County Office of Emergency Services has been closely monitoring the temperature, humidity, and cooling temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and excessive heat warning for the area throughout the weekend.

Stay cool
Stay out of the sun, limit outdoor activity and physical exertion. Seek out air conditioned buildings. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and wide-brimmed hats when outdoors. Lower body temperature by using cold compresses, misting and taking cool showers, baths or sponge baths.

Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks as these can cause dehydration. Eat light meals.

Stay informed
Visit the Public Health Division website for more tips to prevent heat related illness. Keep your friends, family, and neighbors aware of heat safety. For more information and resources, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Extreme Heat site in English and Spanish.

Seek medical attention for heat exhaustion
Be alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion and seek medical attention for profuse sweating and muscle cramping, body temperature of 105 degrees with hot, dry skin, and confusion or unconsciousness.

Protect your pets
Be aware that pets are also vulnerable to high heat. If you think your pet is experiencing heat stress consult a veterinarian immediately for evaluation. Pet owners are reminded to:

  • Never leave pets in a car, even for a minute or two!
  • Be alert for any sign of heat stress including heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting and deep red or purple tongue.
  • Offer a cool place to rest.
  • Call Animal Services or police immediately if you see an animal unattended in a car (707) 253-4451.

PG&E Tips
PG&E is urging customers to conserve energy. As air conditioning use increases, electrical grids can become overwhelmed causing power outages. In power outages, people who rely on electricity-dependent medical devices, like oxygen concentrators, may need assistance so check on family members, friends and neighbors who use this type of equipment. Some conservation tips especially during late afternoons when demand is highest:

  • Adjust your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher or turn it off if you will be away from home.
  • Use a fan instead of air conditioning when possible.
  • Draw drapes and turn off unnecessary lighting.
  • Avoid using electrical appliances and devices. Put off tasks like vacuuming, laundry, dish washing and computer time until after 9 PM.
  • Set your pool pump to run overnight instead of during the day and evening hours.

Napa Valley Vintners Boys & Girls Club in American Canyon

Thanks to all of you for your continuing support in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley's American Canyon "Building the Future" project. As many of you are aware in November of last year we had a ceremonial ground breaking with the intention of starting the construction phase in earnest. However, not surprisingly, that effort was delayed until late spring because of our very wet winter.

We are happy to report that the site work is now well underway and the walls are now going up. Our new 15,000 square foot facility for the kids of American Canyon is now on track to be completed in April of 2018. Although construction costs have increased over the past year, our Board has not wavered. Delaying this project was not an option as the need for this facility is long overdue, and our kids and families are counting on us. Click here for a video showing the construction progress.

The short story is that we need to raise additional funds to complete this project. To that end, we are continuing with our Community and Major Gifts Campaigns and need your help. Please help us finish this campaign by making a contribution today!

You can’t get fresher produce than you’ll find at the market. Think about fresh fruit for snacks or dessert. Hot weather calls for salads filled with fresh veggies.

Get to the market early and enjoy a serious cup of coffee or tea or jump right into lunch where you’ll have many delectable items to choose from.

Music this week will be by local musicians Clarence Mamaril & Rob Directo ("The Search"), playing your favorite cover songs from the past 50 years. They've played at many local events, and are working hard to be American Canyon's favorite band!

For the kids this Sunday we’ll have a maze for them to work their way through.
